Golden Eagles Fall In Four Sets To San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was unable to break back into the win column Friday night in San Francisco.

The Golden Eagles started well, but couldn't sustain it in a 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 loss to San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State L.A. (10-5, 8-4 CCAA) dropped its third straight match and is now two games behind first-place Sonoma State.

Iona Lofrano had a strong effort for the Golden Eagles and had a match-high 24 kills and a hitting percentage of .417. Loreal Carter had 12 kills and two blocks, while Kymberly Silveyra had 12 kills and 17 digs.

April Reyes had a match-high 26 digs for the Golden Eagles.

Kaileen Mejia and Bria Morgan had 15 kills each to lead San Francisco State (8-9, 6-6 CCAA).

The kills were even at 64-64, but San Francisco State hit at a .322 percentage to .290 for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. had a 7-4 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles had three service aces and seven errors, while San Francisco State had four aces and seven errors.

Mia Alcaraz had six kills in only nine swings and added four blocks, while JamieAnn Bero had seven kills and one block. Kelsey Molnar had 53 set assists.

All four sets were tight. The Golden Eagles, after jumping out to an 8-2 lead, held a slim 23-22 lead in the first set before a kill by Silveyra and an ace by Molnar gave them the win.

San Francisco State held just a 23-22 lead in the second set before kills by Mejia and Morgan gave the Gators the set.

The Golden Eagles had an 18-15 lead in the third set after a kill by Molnar, but the Gators rallied and pulled ahead for good after breaking a 21-21 tie. A kill by Lofrano made it 23-22, but the Gators got the final two points to take the set.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 20-15, in the fourth set before making a last-ditch rally. A kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to within 23-22 and a San Francisco State attack error got the Golden Eagles to within 24-23, but a kill by Mejia ended the match.
