Golden Eagles Swept By First-Place Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team ran into a red-hot Sonoma State team on Saturday night and the result was the Golden Eagles' first three-set loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Golden Eagles were unable to slow down a potent Seawolf attack and Sonoma State posted a 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 win. Cal State L.A. (10-6, 8-5 CCAA) lost its fourth straight match, while Sonoma State (13-4, 11-2 CCAA) maintained its conference lead. Cal State L.A. hit a respectable .286 in the match, but Sonoma State hit at a sizzling .529 clip and was virtually unstoppable in the final two sets. The Seawolves hit at a .750 clip with 15 kills and no errors in 20 swings in the second set and they hit at a .594 clip in the third set with 20 kills and only one error in 32 swings.

Iona Lofrano had a match-high 17 kills and hit at a .485 percentage for the Golden Eagles, while Loreal Carter had 10 kills.

Kelsey Hull had 14 kills and hit at a .778 percentage, Caylie Seitz had 13 kills and hit at a .600 percentage and Madelyn Densberger had 11 kills and hit at a .579 percentage for the Seawolves.

Kelsey Molnar had 31 set assists and one service ace for the Golden Eagles.

Sonoma State had a 50-35 edge in kills and a 4-2 edge in blocks. The Seawolves also had an 8-2 advantage in service aces.

The Golden Eagles led as late as 11-10 in the opening set after a kill by Mia Alcaraz, but Sonoma State scored the next three points and never looked back. Cal State L.A. took an early 7-5 lead in the second set following a kill by Lofrano, but the Seawolves went on a 12-2 run to open up a 17-9 advantage. The Golden Eagles were never able to recover.

Cal State L.A. never led in the third set. Sonoma State moved to match point at 24-17 before a kill by Carter and an ace by Lofrano prompted a Sonoma State timeout. After the stoppage, the Seawolves got their 50th and final kill of the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona.
