LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put an end to a four-match losing streak and pulled itself right back into the conference mix.
The Golden Eagles shook off a slow start and beat Cal Poly Pomona, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-6, 9-5 CCAA) had tumbled from first place into a tie for fifth before winning on Friday. The Golden Eagles are one game out of third place and three games out of first in the conference.
Cal State L.A. was able to even the season series with Cal Poly Pomona (10-7, 8-6 CCAA), which had come into the match riding a four-game winning streak.
Iona Lofrano had 13 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Loreal Carter had 12 kills and
Kymberly Silveyra had 11 kills and five blocks.
Lauren Jones led Cal Poly Pomona with 13 kills and two blocks, Deanna Blaine had 12 kills and Alexa Hasen had 11 kills and four blocks.
Cal Poly Pomona had a slight 49-48 edge in kills, while Cal State L.A. had a 9-8 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles had a 7-6 advantage in service aces and had 13 service errors to 12 for the Broncos.
Kelsey Molnar had 36 set assists to go along with four kills, while
Colby Joseph had three service aces for Cal State L.A.
JamieAnn Bero had seven kills and four blocks.
Cal Poly Pomona dominated the first set and hit at a .565 clip to win going away, 25-17. The Golden Eagles, though, evened the match in a tight second set. Cal State L.A. had an 18-14 lead evaporate after four straight Cal Poly Pomona points and the set was tied for a final time at 20-20. The Golden Eagles took a 21-20 lead on a service error and then took advantage of a ball-handling error and an attack error to take a 23-20 lead. A kill by Carter got the Golden Eagles to set point and a service error gave the Golden Eagles the second set.
Cal State L.A. came up big in the end of the third set to grab the lead. The Golden Eagles trailed, 21-20, but got kills from Carter and Silveyra and two Cal Poly Pomona attack errors to grab a 24-20 lead. After a kill by Hasen extended the set, a kill by Lofrano ended it.
Cal State L.A. then wrapped up the match in the fourth set. The Golden Eagles opened up a 21-17 lead after a block by
Mia Alcaraz and Silveyra, but the Broncos fought back, to within 22-20 before back-to-back kills by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to match point. After a kill by Jones extended the match, Lofrano pounded down another kill to give the Golden Eagles the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home match against UC San Diego.
