LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team took a little while to get started, but once the Golden Eagles got going, they were hard to stop Sunday.
The Golden Eagles were stymied by Saint Martin's for most of the first half, before scoring late in the opening period and then breaking the game open with three goals in a six-minute span of the second period in a 4-0 win.
The season-opening win was the first for new women's coach Isabelle Harvey, who returned to Cal State L.A. after eight seasons away.
Cal State L.A. had a 15-7 edge in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in the opening half. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks with three in each period.
Amalia Arvidsson had two goals in one assist in her debut with the Golden Eagles. Freshman newcomer Veronika Steen and junior Andrea Lammers each scored a goal, while Heather Williams had a pair of assists.
Amanda Johnson made one save for the shutout.
The game was scoreless until the 35th minute when Steen finished off a nice give-and-go with Williams by knocking in a shot past Saint Martin's goalkeeper Gina Cardenas.
The Golden Eagles came out in the second half with much more energy and scored quickly to finally get some breathing room. Arvidsson had a part in all three second-half goals. First, she sent in a nice cross that Lammers was able to re-direct smartly into the goal for her first goal of the season in the 55th minute.
Then, less than four minutes later, Arvidsson received a perfectly-placed through ball from Williams and scored to make it 3-0 in the 59th minute. Arvidsson had another nice strike after a pass from Norie Pablo in the 61st minute that completed the scoring.
Arvidsson very nearly had a three-goal game, but her curving shot from some distance hit the crossbar and bounded away in the 49th minute.
Johnson made her lone save in the less than a minute after Arvidsson's blast hit the bar while denying the Saints' Taylor Gersch.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday night with its final non-conference match of the season against Point Loma Nazarene at 7 p.m.
