SAN BERNARDINO – After missing out on an opportunity to knock off a nationally-ranked team in its first match of the day Friday, Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball made sure it completed the job in its second contest at Cal State San Bernardino's volleyball tournament.
The Golden Eagles fell to No. 13 Regis in five sets to start the day, but took care of NCAA Division II West Region opponent Seattle Pacific in four sets to finish the day. Cal State L.A. (1-1) held 2-1 leads in both matches and finished strong against the Falcons to conclude the long day of competition.
Iona Lofrano had a team-high 17 kills to spark the Golden Eagles to a 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17 win over Seattle Pacific. She also had three service aces and a team-high 13 digs. Kymberly Silveyra had 13 kills and 11 digs. JamieAnn Bero had eight kills and four blocks, while Bethanee Boggs had seven kills and three aces.
Cal State L.A. had a 54-42 advantage in kills and hit at a .206 percentage to .188 for the Falcons. The Golden Eagles also served well with 10 aces and just four errors, while Seattle Pacific had seven aces and 11 errors. Seattle Pacific had a 14-6 edge in blocks.
After splitting the first two sets, Cal State L.A. took control of the match with a tight win in the third frame. From a 19-19 tie, the Golden Eagles took advantage of an attack error, a kill by Silveyra and an ace by Lofrano to take the lead for good. A kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a kill by Bero ended the set.
Cal State L.A. then finished strongly and closed out the match. The Golden Eagles broke a 9-9 tie with six straight points and never looked back. An attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good and two aces by Lofrano and kills by Silveyra and Boggs fueled the run.
Seattle Pacific got as close as 18-15, but that was it. A block by Alexandra Bura and Bero that followed a kill by Lofrano boosted the lead back to 20-15. A kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by Lofrano following a Seattle Pacific sideout ended the match.
Alexandra Bura had 42 set assists, six kills and three blocks.
The Golden Eagles had their chances against nationally-ranked Regis earlier in the day, but could not put the Rams away. Cal State L.A. took the second and third sets, but fell behind quickly in the fourth set and then faltered in the fifth.
Lofrano had 13 kills, 14 digs and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Silveyra had 11 kills and 15 digs. Boggs had 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage, while Bero had nine kills and three blocks.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .126 percentage to .186 for Regis and had 52 kills compared to 58 for Regis. Regis also had an 8-7 edge in blocking and a 5-3 advantage in service aces.
Bura had 43 set assists and 12 digs, while April Reyes had a team-high 25 digs.
After dropping the first set, Cal State L.A. roared out to a 22-9 lead in the second set. The Rams threw a brief scare into the Golden Eagles, slicing the deficit to 24-20 before a kill by Boggs gave the Golden Eagles the second set.
It was more of the same in the third set as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 20-12 lead and never looked back. A kill by Loreal Carter got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-15 and a kill by Boggs gave Cal State L.A. a 2-1 sets lead.
The situation was completely reversed in the final two sets as the Golden Eagles fell behind early and had to try to rally. Regis opened up early leads of 10-2 and 16-7 while taking the fourth set and evening the match.
In the fifth set, back-to-back kills by Bero and a Regis attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 5-4 lead, but Regis scored the next four points to take the lead for good.
Cal State L.A. will conclude play in the tournament with matches against Fort Lewis and Harding.
