Golden Eagles Stung By San Bernardino In Overtime

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw more hard luck come its way Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Track.

Cal State San Bernardino scored in the fifth minute of overtime following a foul just outside the box and stunned the Golden Eagles, 1-0. Paige Kang got to the rebound first after the free kick hit players in the wall and blasted a shot into the right corner of the net for the game-winner.

Cal State L.A. (3-4-1, 1-4-1 CCAA) had its chances just moments before, but couldn't connect on a pair of corner kicks after pinning Cal State San Bernardino (6-2-1, 4-1-1 CCAA) deep in its zone. Heather Williams got off a hard shot in the 93rd minute, but Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Chelsea Jones made the save to deny the threat.

The Coyotes then worked the ball into Cal State L.A. territory and the fateful foul was called after players from each side got tangled up just outside the box. The Golden Eagles were whistled for the foul and Cal State San Bernardino took full advantage of the opportunity.

Yi Du made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Jones made seven saves for the Coyotes.

Cal State L.A. had the edge in possession for most of the game, enjoying a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles also had several long throw-ins to the box from Darci Smith, but Cal State San Bernardino defenders did a nice job of preventing the Golden Eagles from capitalizing on their opportunities.

The 1-0 defeat was the third one-goal loss in games where Cal State L.A. had a decided advantage in scoring chances. The Golden Eagles also lost to Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, on Sept. 13 and to San Francisco State on Sept. 20 in games where they had a wide disparity in shots.

Williams had another strong game for the Golden Eagles, gaining possession in the midfield and also generating two strong scoring bids. Amalia Arvidsson also had a pair of shots on goal for Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Sonoma State.
