LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team finally played its first home game of the 2013 season, but the Golden Eagles were unable to put the finishing touches on an exciting California Collegiate Athletic Association match.

San Francisco State (6-5, 1-2 CCAA) came up big down the stretch to win its first conference match of the young season.

Iona Lofrano, who became just the fourth Cal State L.A. student-athlete to win national Player of the Week honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, continued her outstanding play, recording 26 kills to go along with 13 digs and three blocks. She was just one kill away from her career-high of 27 that she recorded last week at Humboldt State.

Bethanee Boggs had 13 kills and five blocks, while Kymberly Silveyra had 12 kills and 17 digs.

Cal State L.A. had a 69-65 edge in kills and a 14-8 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles, though, had four service aces and nine service errors, while the Gators had five aces and five errors.

Jaclyn Clark had 17 kills and 16 digs and had two big kills late in the fifth set. Meagan Wright also had 17 kills and seven blocks, including five solo blocks. Melissa Horton had 12 kills and 14 digs, while Kaileen Mejia had 10 kills.

JamieAnn Bero just missed a double-double with nine kills and eight blocks. Alexandra Bura had 56 set assists and 16 digs and April Reyes had a team-high 22 digs.

The Golden Eagles certainly had their chances to make their home opener a winning one. Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set, only to eventually lose the frame. The Golden Eagles held a 23-20 lead, but San Francisco State scored the next four points before a kill by Silveyra knotted it at 24-24. Kills by Kelly Ostello and Horton won the set for the Gators.

Cal State L.A. evened things up by taking the second set. The Golden Eagles scored the first three points and never trailed, eventually taking a 24-15 lead after back-to-back blocks from Bura and Bero and then closing out the set on a kill by Bura.

The Golden Eagles took a tightly-contested third set, moving out to a 24-21 lead after a kill by Boggs and taking the set with a block by Loreal Carter and Boggs.

San Francisco State took the fourth set to send the match to a fifth frame.

The fifth set was tight throughout with eight ties and three lead changes. The Golden Eagles trailed, 9-8, before scoring four straight points to take a 12-9 edge. A kill by Lofrano and a block by Carter and Bero gave the Golden Eagles a three-point lead.

The Gators, though, regrouped and got a kill by Ostello, a block by Wright, an attack error, two kills by Clark and a block by Wright and Clark to end the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. with an afternoon match against Sonoma State.
