Box Score 2 BELMONT -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got a four-set win over Alaska Fairbanks to start its second day of competition Saturday at the Route 92 Showdown, but ended the day with a split after falling to Northwest Nazarene in three sets later in the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles split the first two sets, but then went on to beat Alaska Fairbanks, 25-20, 19-25, 25-12, 25-15, Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles then never got untracked in a 25-19, 25-13, 31-29 loss to Northwest Nazarene to wrap up tourney play. Cal State L.A. (5-3) ended the two-day tourney with a 2-2 record with wins over Saint Martin's and Alaska Fairbanks and losses to Seattle Pacific and Northwest Nazarene.
Cal State L.A. got a match-high 21 kills from
Kymberly Silveyra in the win over Alaska Fairbanks. She also had a team-high 11 digs and hit at a .439 percentage.
Bethanee Boggs had 12 kills and hit at a sizzling .647 clip, while
Iona Lofrano had 13 kills.
Alexandra Bura and
Shea Hamilton had 24 set assists each, while
April Reyes had 10 digs. Silveyra and
Lauren Gomez each had two of the Golden Eagles' eight service aces.
The Golden Eagles hit at a season's best .376 percentage and Alaska (0-10) hit at a .226 percentage. Cal State L.A. had a 58-46 advantage in kills and an 8-5 edge in service aces.
The Golden Eagles pulled away late in the first set to open up a lead. The Golden Eagles led by just a 20-18 margin before kills by Silveyra and Lofrano, an ace from Silveyra and a kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-18. A Lofrano kill eventually ended the set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the second set, 13-7, and never full recovered. A kill by Silveyra brought the Golden Eagles to within two at 21-19, but Alaska ran off the final four points to claim the set.
Cal State L.A. opened up a 15-8 lead in the third set after a Boggs kill and a Silveyra ace made it 19-10. An ace by Gomez with the Golden Eagles leading 24-12 ended the set.
Cal State L.A. took control early in the fourth set as well. Silveyra had back-to-back kills to give the Golden Eagles an 8-3 lead and a block by Boggs and
Yesenia Ibrahim made it 21-13. A kill by
JamieAnn Bero got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by Hamilton ended it.
Cal State L.A. did not enjoy similiar success in the tourney finale. Northwest Nazarene had a 44-39 edge in kills and a .258 hitting percentage to just .171 for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. also did not serve well with only three aces and eight service errors. Northwest Nazarene was much more efficient with seven aces and four errors. Northwest Nazarene also had a sizeable advantage in blocks.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and never could get going. After dropping the first two sets, the Golden Eagles battled to extend the match, only to fall short. After staving off one match point on a block by Bero and
Loreal Carter, the Golden Eagles got a set point at 26-25 on a kill by Bero. The Golden Eagles got a second set point after a kill by Lofrano, but Northwest Nazarene countered with two straight points to take their second match point at 28-27. Silveyra recorded a kill to make it 28-28 and another Silveyra kill helped the Golden Eagles dodge a third match point at 29-28. Northwest Nazarene, though, got the final two points, the final one on a block at the net, to end the match.
Cal State L.A. will now open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Thursday with a road match at Humboldt State.
