Golden Eagles Drop Tough 1-0 Decision To Broncos

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had its chances, but came up empty in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles had big edges in shots and corner kicks, but not in goals and the Broncos used a first-half goal and held on for a 1-0 win at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) allowed its first goal of the season and it was enough to account for the Golden Eagles' first loss.

The Golden Eagles had a 22-6 edge in shots, although only six of them were on frame. One of them went off frame – a bid by Andrea Lammers after some intense Cal State L.A. pressure bounced off the crossbar and away.

Cal State L.A. had all 13 shots in the second half and five of its 10 corner kicks.

Cal Poly Pomona (3-0, 1-0 CCAA) got a goal from Samantha Stiles in the 21st minute with an assist from Rachel Killigrew. It was a long-range shot that took an unfortunate bounce for the Golden Eagles and skipped into the net inside the near post.

Sarah Rohman was strong in net for the Broncos and made six saves. Cal State L.A.'s Amanda Johnson made two saves.

The Golden Eagles had a slim 9-6 edge in shots in the opening half.

The Golden Eagles, though, came out with renewed energy in the second half and sustained an aggressive attack throughout. Cal Poly Pomona, though, never wavered and Rohman and the defense preserved the lead.

Cal State L.A. dominated the final 20 minutes of the game, but still couldn't score. The best opportunity came in the 72nd minute after a corner kick by Amalia Arvidsson. Lammers came up with the ball from point-blank range and rifled a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced away.

Arvidsson got to the rebound first, but her hard shot went just wide.

Shea Richards had a good look in the 82nd minute that went high and Megan Ollar had a header that went just high in the 85th minute. The Golden Eagles got their 10th and final corner kick in the 88th minute, but Cal Poly Pomona was able to clear the ball out of danger and preserved its lead.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against UC San Diego at 2 p.m.
