BELMONT – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got its wakeup call just in time to turn around its opening match of the Route 92 Showdown Friday at Notre Dame de Namur.
The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 0-2 hole against underdog Saint Martin's before rallying to post a 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-10 victory in Walter Gleason Gym.
Cal State L.A. tried that same tactic in its second match of the day, but this time it didn't work. Seattle Pacific regrouped in the fifth set and earned a 25-19, 26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 15-4 victory. The Golden Eagles had to settle for a split in their two matches versus the Falcons this year.
Iona Lofrano had a career-high 25 kills and hit at a .345 percentage to lead the Golden Eagles, while Kymberly Silveyra overcame a slow start and finished with 14 kills and 14 digs. Loreal Carter finished with 10 kills and two blocks.
April Reyes had 23 digs, while Alexandra Bura had a career-high 60 set assists.
Cal State L.A. had a 66-54 advantage in kills and hit .238 to .201 for Saint Martin's (1-5). The Golden Eagles didn't serve well and had six aces against 12 service errors. The Saints had three aces and 11 service errors.
The Golden Eagles struggled from the start and trailed for most of the first two sets. Cal State L.A. had to battle to stay in the match in the third set. The score was tied at 15-15 before a service error and kills by Bura and Lofrano put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. The Golden Eagles got to set point after a kill by Lofrano and ended the set on a Saint Martin's attack error.
The Golden Eagles took the fourth set as well to even the match. Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 13-7 lead and never looked back. Kills by Lofrano accounted for the Golden Eagles' final two points of the set.
Cal State L.A. led early in the fifth set, but Saint Martin's battled back to tie it at 8-8. The Golden Eagles took the lead on a service error and back-to-back kills by Silveyra made it 11-8. The Saints got as close as 12-10 before a block by Carter and Bethanee Boggs, an attack error and a kill by Lofrano ended the match.
Cal State L.A. got 14 kills and three blocks from JamieAnn Bero in the match against Seattle Pacific and 12 more kills from Iona Lofrano. Silveyra had a team-high 18 digs.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .137 percentage to .208 for the Falcons. Seattle Pacific also had a 16-7 edge in blocks.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with two more matches against Alaska Fairbanks and Northwest Nazarene.
