LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got a big boost from newcomer Amalia Arvidsson just moments after a scary collision in front of Point Loma's goal.
Arvidsson's goal in the 80th minute was the difference in the game as Cal State L.A. edged Point Loma, 1-0, Tuesday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-0) posted its second consecutive shutout after prevailing in a tight battle against a determined Point Loma team.
Arvidsson and Point Loma goalie Lupe Herrera were both shaken up after a major collision. After staying down for a few minutes, Arvidsson came off the field and regrouped. When she returned, she did the scoring honors with a beautiful strike inside the far post to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Veronika Steen and Andrea Lammers got assists on the play for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. had a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Point Loma's defense, though, was very effective at weathering the Cal State L.A. attack before Arvidsson finally broke through with her third goal of the season.
It was a well-deserved goal for Arvidsson, who had a bid denied on a brilliant save by Herrera in the 76th minute. Arvidsson drilled a shot that Herrera deflected with her fingertips in a spectacular diving stop.
The Golden Eagles were unsuccessful on the ensuing corner kick and the game stayed scoreless until Arvidsson's goal in the 80th minute.
Both goalkeepers were strong in Tuesday's battle. Herrera made six saves for Point Loma (0-3), while Amanda Johnson made three saves for the Golden Eagles.
Johnson came up big with a pair of saves in the second half, one on a drive by Amanda Mitchell and the other on a header by Tara Kracy.
The first strong scoring chance of the game came in the 11th minute when Arvidsson ran down a pass from Samantha Footlik and sent a shot toward the inside post that Herrera dove to knock away
That led to a corner kick and a header by Janelle Hanna sailed wide.
Arvidsson had another strong shot through traffic in the 23rd minute that was denied by another diving stop by Herrera.
Point Loma's best chance of the opening half came in the 26th minute when Dottie Rhoten was able to get around a challenging Johnson, but her attempt from a sharp angle hit the side of the net.
Heather Williams had a shot hit the post for the Golden Eagles in the 59th minute and stay out.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
