Cal State L.A. made just 8-of-29 field-goal attempts in the first half and fell behind, 31-21, at halftime. The Golden Eagles finished with an 18-of-60 performance from the field and made only 2-of-15 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) and shot even better from behind the 3-point line, knocking down 7-of-13 attempts. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Otters were 13-of-16.

Cal State L.A. had a slim 40-38 rebounding edge and forced 16 Cal State Monterey Bay turnovers while committing 15.

The Golden Eagles led only once, after a layup by Richelle Najera to open the scoring. The Golden Eagles were tied twice more, at 4-4 after a basket by Paige Melville and at 6-6 after a jumper by Alyssa Hanson. Cal State Monterey Bay scored the next four points and never trailed again.

The Otters then took a 42-28 and Cal State L.A. struggled to remain within striking distance the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Maryum Jenkins, a basket by Williams and a layup by Hanson sparked a 7-0 run and pulled the Golden Eagles to within 42-35 and a 3-pointer by Powell kept Cal State L.A. within eight points, 50-42, with 5:45 still to play. A jumper by Powell made it 60-52 with 1:21 remaining, but Cal State Monterey Bay hit four free throws down the stretch to extend its final margin.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
