Box Score SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and a determined defense effort to put an end to a disappointing three-game losing streak Friday night.
The Golden Eagles held Cal State Monterey Bay to just 28 percent shooting and beat the Otters, 60-50, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at the Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (11-8, 8-7 CCAA) remains in a fourth-place tie with UC San Diego in the conference standings.
Cal State L.A. got 19 points from
James Tillman, who led four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Quinton Watkins had 11 points,
Julian Camper had 10 points and eight rebounds and
Joshua Munzon had 10 points, including a big four-point play during the second half.
Jordan Richard had six points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.
Kevin Loustale and Kris Gallop had 11 points each to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (8-14, 4-11 CCAA), while Coley Apsay had 10 points.
Cal State L.A. made 21-of-51 from the floor (41.2 percent), while Cal State Monterey Bay was held to 15-of-54 (27.8 percent). The Golden Eagles were 4-of-14 from behind the 3-point arc (28.6 percent), while the Otters made only 2-of-14 (14.3 percent). The Golden Eagles made only half of their 28 free-throw attempts, while Cal State Monterey Bay was a more efficient 18-of-27 from the line.
The Golden Eagles held a 43-36 rebounding edge, but also committed 16 turnovers to 10 for the Otters.
Cal State L.A. never trailed and led for almost the entire game. Watkins hit back-to-back 3-pointers to break an 8-8 tie and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. After the Otters sliced the lead to 23-20, a layup by Watkins and a dunk by Tillman pushed the back to seven and a tip-in by Munzon at the halftime buzzer made it 29-21 at the break.
Camper opened the second half with a basket to give Cal State L.A. its first double-digit lead at 31-21. Munzon converted a four-point play after knocking down a 3-pointer, getting fouled and making the free throw to give the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 41-30, with 12 minutes remaining.
A 3-pointer by Watkins gave the Golden Eagles a 44-34 lead and after Cal State Monterey Bay closed to within five points twice, Tillman had a three-point play to push the lead back to 54-46 with two minutes left. Cal State Monterey Bay got to within six points in the final minute, but a dunk by Tillman and a free throw by Munzon completed the scoring.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
