Golden Eagles Post Big Road Win Over Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team used a balanced and efficient offensive attack and a huge rebounding advantage to post a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road win over Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles shot a sizzling 56.3 percent and had a 43-26 rebounding edge to beat the Broncos, 85-69, Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (18-10, 13-8 CCAA) won its third straight game and completed a regular-season sweep over Cal Poly Pomona (13-12, 11-10 CCAA).

The win enabled the Golden Eagles to pull to within one-half game of fourth-place Cal State East Bay in the conference race. Cal State L.A., which has clinched a spot in the eight-team CCAA Championship Tournament, is trying to secure a first-round game at home. The top four teams will host first-round games on Tuesday, March 5.

Tessondra Williams, coming off a 33-point effort last Saturday in a win over Chico State, added 22 more on Wednesday against Cal Poly Pomona. Kaija Powell had 16 points and seven rebounds, Maryum Jenkins had 13 points, four rebounds and two steals and Richelle Najera had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Mian Dingle led five Broncos in double figures with 16 points. Cydnie Jones had 13 points and six rebounds, while Ashley Boggs, J.J. Judge and Rachel Hatch had 10 points each.

The Golden Eagles shot 56.3 percent for the game (27-of-48), while limiting Cal Poly Pomona to just 38.2 percent (21-of-55). Cal State L.A. was even better in the second half, shooting 61.5 percent (16-of-26). The Golden Eagles were 28-of-38 from the free-throw line, while the Broncos were 19-of-30). Cal State L.A. was just 3-of-13 from behind the 3-point arc, wihle Cal Poly Pomona was 8-of-24.

Cal State L.A. led for most of the game, but Cal Poly Pomona was able to stay within striking distance for much of the contest. The Golden Eagles held a slim 11-10 lead before going on a 14-1 run that opened up a 25-11 advantage. Chiara DiMarco hit a 3-pointer to start the run, Powell made a steal and a layup, Alyssa Hanson made a layup and Najera made a steal and layup before two free throws by Paige Melville gave the Golden Eagles the 14-point lead.

Cal Poly Pomona, though, went on a 20-6 run to tie it at 31-31 before a basket by Samantha Hansen gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Another late layup by Hansen gave the Golden Eagles a 36-33 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run on the strength of a free throw by DiMarco, four free throws by Powell, two free throws by Williams and a layup by Jenkins to take a 62-52 lead. A layup by Najera and a three-point play by Williams pushed the lead to 67-54 with 5:41 to go and the Golden Eagles led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will complete the regular season with a road game at Humboldt State on Friday night.
