Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for a second straight year following a win over Cal State Stanislaus Friday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.
The Golden Eagles shot an efficient 49 percent and beat the Warriors, 79-59, on the start of a season-ending four-game road swing. Cal State L.A. (16-10, 11-8 CCAA) is in fifth place in the conference and remained one game back of fourth-place Cal State East Bay. The top four teams in the conference will host first-round conference tournament game on Tuesday, March 5.
Tessondra Williams led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points, while
Paige Melville played well and had 15 points.
Devin Riezebos also had a strong game for the Golden Eagles with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Warriors (2-22, 1-18 CCAA) also had three players reach double figures, led by Briana Cotton with 16 points. Natalie Winters had 11 points and Lauren Godde had 10 points.
Cal State L.A. made 28-of-57 field-goal attempts (49.1 percent) and 4-of-14 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles held the Warriors to just 32.7 percent shooting (17-of-52) and also enjoyed a 42-28 rebounding advantage. The Golden Eagles were also 19-of-27 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 16-of-28.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed good balance.
Kaija Powell had nine points and eight rebounds in a strong performance and
Alisha Belt had eight points and six rebounds.
Cal State L.A. had to fight through a slow start and fell behind, 12-6, in the early stages of the game. A 3-pointer by Williams tied it up at 13-13 and a pair of free throws by Belt gave the Golden Eagles a 15-13 lead. Riezebos added an offensive rebound and basket and the Golden Eagles never trailed again. The Golden Eagles took a seven-point lead, 23-16, after a layup by Powell and, after the Warriors mounted a rally, Melville hit a big 3-pointer just before halftime to make it 39-34 at the break.
The Warriors pulled to within two points early in the second half, but the Golden Eagles broke the game open with an 18-2 run that gave them a 55-39 lead with 13 minutes to play. Riezebos started the run with a basket and Melville followed with a pair of free throws. Belt scored to make it 45-37 and, after a Cal State Stanislaus basket, the Golden Eagles got a layup by Melville, two free throws by Williams, a basket by Riezebos, a basket by
Alyssa Hanson and a 3-pointer by Williams to build their 16-point lead.
Williams hit another 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 62-43 lead with nine minutes to play and a free throw by
Samantha Hansen gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 66-45, with six minutes to play.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at first-place Chico State.
