Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team used a balanced approach to end its frustrating four-game losing streak.
The Golden Eagles had five players score in double figures and beat San Francisco State, 75-60, Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-9, 10-7 CCAA) shot 46.3 percent for the game and finally got its offense untracked against a very good San Francisco State defense.
Tessondra Williams scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Samantha Hansen had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Chiara DiMarco had 13 points,
Kelli Lewis had 11 points, all in the second half, and
Maryum Jenkins had 10 points.
Desiree Collins had an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double and Farrah Shokoor had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Cal State L.A. shot 46.3 percent overall (25-of-54) and knocked down seven 3-pointers in 16 tries. The Golden Eagles were also 18-of-28 from the free-throw line (64.3 percent). Cal State L.A. limited San Francisco State to just 34.5 percent shooting (20-of-58) and just 25 percent from behind the 3-point arc (4-of-16).
The Golden Eagles had a 41-39 rebounding edge and forced 20 turnovers while committing 19.
Richelle Najera had a career-high 15 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. started slowly and trailed, 15-9, seven minutes into the game. Five straight points by DiMarco – on a 3-pointer and a driving layup – and a free throw by Hansen tied it up and Cal State L.A. eventually took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by DiMarco that gave the Golden Eagles a 22-20 edge with 8:24 remaining in the half.
The Golden Eagles built leads as large as seven points in the first half and took a 35-28 lead in the final minute on a 3-pointer by Williams. A three-point play by San Francisco State's Shokoor made it 35-31 at halftime.
San Francisco State stayed within striking distance for most of the second half, but could not catch up. A 3-pointer by Lewis gave the Golden Eagles a 61-52 lead with 5:30 to go and a free throw by
Paige Melville gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 62-52 with 5:18 to play.
A layup and a free throw by Williams put the Golden Eagles ahead, 65-54, with 4:11 to go and another layup by Williams made it 69-54 with 2:52 to go. A layup by Hansen gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 73-57, with 1:17 remaining.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night in its final home game of the season against Sonoma State. The Golden Eagles will honor nine seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
