Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team ran into an inspired Cal State San Bernardino team that did just about everything right Friday night.
The Golden Eagles were limited to just 31.6 percent shooting and managed only 18 points in the second half of a disappointing 64-47 California Collegiate Athletic Association defeat in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (14-6, 9-4 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped and slipped two games behind first-place Chico State.
Cal State San Bernardino (7-10, 5-8 CCAA) looked nothing like a team that entered Friday's game on a five-game losing streak. The Coyotes shot well, took care of the ball and played tenacious defense. Cal State San Bernardino limited Cal State L.A. to just 25 percent shooting in the second half and steadily pulled away.
The 47 points were a season low for the Golden Eagles.
Tessondra Williams had another sensational game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 28 points, but no other Cal State L.A. player reached double figures.
Paige Melville and
Alisha Belt scored six points each, while
Richelle Najera had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Tayllor Gipson had a tremendous game for the Coyotes, hitting 10-of-16 shots and finishing with 25 points. Trinidee Trice also had a big game with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double. Eliza Dy had 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Cal State L.A. finished the game shooting 31.6 percent (18-of-57), while Cal State San Bernardino was a much more efficient 45.8 percent (27-of-59). The Golden Eagles had a 40-34 rebounding edge, but committed 18 turnovers to just eight for the Coyotes.
Cal State San Bernardino shot 51.6 percent in the opening half while jumping out to a 33-29 halftime lead and the Coyotes never trailed in the second half. Cal State L.A. got as close as three points midway through the period, but never could regain the lead.
The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the game on a basket by Belt, a free throw by Melville, a layup by Williams and a jumper by Melville, but the Coyotes scored the next six points and began to take control of the game.
Cal State San Bernardino took its first lead of the game at 12-11 after an offensive rebound and basket by Trice. Cal State L.A. got a 3-pointer from Williams to take a 17-16 lead, but that was the last time the Golden Eagles would lead. The Coyotes built leads as large as seven points in the first half before a three-point play in the last second of the period by Williams sliced the lead down to 33-29 at halftime.
Melville hit a 3-pointer to open the second half for the Golden Eagles, but Dy answered right back with a 3-pointer to keep the lead at four points.
Cal State L.A. got as close as three points after a jumper by Williams made it 41-38 with 13 minutes to play, but the Coyotes scored the next four points and kept the Golden Eagles at arm's length the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home game against UC San Diego.
