Golden Eagles Clinch CCAA Tournament Spot

Box Score CCAA Tournament Announcement

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team waited until the final minute - literally - to wrap up the fourth and final spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles scored a dramatic victory over UC San Diego when Andrea Lammers scored in the final minute of the second overtime to give Cal State L.A. a 1-0 victory at Triton Stadium. Cal State L.A. (10-5-3, 8-5-3 CCAA) finished second in the CCAA South Division with 27 points and will make an appearance in the championship tournament after a one-year absence. The Golden Eagles won the conference title in 2009.

The Golden Eagles went into Sunday's game knowing they would advance with either a win or a tie against UC San Diego (7-6-5, 6-5-5 CCAA), which entered the day one point back of Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles had a statistical advantage throughout the match, but couldn't break through until the final minute. Lammers received a short pass from the right side from defender Monique Cherry and hit a low shot that found the back of the net. It was Lammers' eighth goal of the season.

UC San Diego had history on its side entering the high-stakes game. The Tritons had reached the four-team championship tournament every year since joining the CCAA in 2000 and was an eight-time conference champion, including last year's title. UC San Diego had also won the first meeting between the two programs earlier this season, taking a 3-1 decision in Los Angeles on Sept. 15.

This is a different - and much improved - Cal State L.A. team since then. The Golden Eagles were 8-2-2 over their final 12 regular-season games to overcome an 0-3-1 start to their conference schedule.

The Golden Eagles were strong at the start of Sunday's game and got stronger as the game went on. Cal State L.A. had a 4-3 advantage in shots in a tightly-played first half and then enjoyed an 11-3 advantage in the second overtime and a 6-1 edge in the first overtime. Lammers' shot was the lone attempt in the second overtime.

That all added up to a 22-8 advantage for the game. Cal State L.A. also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Yi Du had three saves for the shutout, while UC San Diego's Kelcie Brodsky made eight saves.

The Golden Eagles had a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation, only to see a header by Janelle Hanna hit the crossbar and stay out in the 70th minute.

Cal State L.A. then had its six chances in the first overtime before the game went to a second overtime. The game seemed headed for a tie until Lammers' dramatic game-winner.

The win was also big for NCAA Division II West Region rankings. The Golden Eagles were rated sixth in the most recent rankings, while UC San Diego was fourth. The next rankings will come out on Wednesday.

First, though, Cal State L.A. now has a chance to earn the conference's automatic bid, which is awarded to the CCAA's tournament champion. The Golden Eagles will open play on Friday in a semi-final match with No. 1 seed and tournament host Cal State Stanislaus at 7 p.m.
