Golden Eagles Complete Season Sweep Of Toros

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team still has its postseason fate in its hands after coming up with an important win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles got a goal in each half and beat the Toros, 2-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Friday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (9-5-3, 7-5-3 CCAA) maintains its hold on second place in the CCAA South Division and still holds the No. 4 spot for the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles can wrap up a bid with a tie or win Sunday at UC San Diego, which enters the showdown one point behind Cal State L.A. for the conference's fourth and final spot.

Cal State L.A., which is ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II West Region, took care of business on Friday and bounced back from its disappointing loss at Chico State on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles had a 20-8 advantage in shots, including a big 15-1 edge in the first half. Cal State L.A. also had all five of the game's corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles had a pair of golden opportunities in the first three minutes of the game, but Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Jennifer Ackerly made saves on a header by Megan Ollar and a point-blank shot from Stephanie Lopez.

The Golden Eagles, though, finally broke through in the 17th minute when Amalia Arvidsson scored her ninth goal of the season. Ollar started the scoring sequence with a cross that was deflected by Andrea Lammers to Arvidsson, who promptly slotted the ball into the right corner of the net.

The game remained at 1-0 and Cal State Dominguez Hills got its attack ramped up in the second half before a second Cal State L.A. put the game away. Lammers did the scoring honors with an assist from Heather Williams. It was the ninth assist of the season for Williams, who ran down a clearance from Monique Cherry, dribbled through some traffic and sent a pass to a racing Lammers, who did the rest, slotting a ball inside the far post in the 63rd minute.

Yi Du had a strong game for the Golden Eagles and made five saves, four of them coming in the second half.

Cal State L.A. honored its 12 seniors – Janelle Hanna, Stephanie Lopez, Samantha Footlik, Janeth Arroyo, Megan Ollar, Darci Smith, Alexandra Barrett-Scherrer, Adriana Valdez, Shereen Khoobbagha, Joanne Almaguer, Allyson Sherwood and Sydney Mullen – all of whom played meaningful minutes in the victory.

Cal State L.A. will now wrap up its regular season with a road game at UC San Diego on Sunday at 2 p.m., needing a win or a tie to advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.
