Golden Eagles Score Three To Edge No. 15 Seawolves

Box Score

ROHNERT PARK – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had been searching for a positive result and the Golden Eagles finally got one against a nationally-ranked opponent.

The Golden Eagles got goals from Andrea Lammers, Amalia Arvidsson and Norie Pablo and held on to beat No. 15 Sonoma State, 3-2, Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Seawolf Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (4-4-1, 2-4-1 CCAA) won for the second time in three games.

The Golden Eagles also handed Sonoma State (6-1-2, 4-1-2 CCAA) its first loss of the season.

The three goals were the most in game for the Golden Eagles since they scored four in their season opener against Saint Martin's. Cal State L.A. entered the game on Friday with just five goals in its previous seven games and hadn't scored more than one goal since the win over Saint Martin's.

Offense wouldn't be a problem on Friday. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute on Lammers' goal, only to see the Seawolves tie it just three minutes later.

Cal State L.A., though, got two goals in a three-minute span early in the second half to take control of the game. Both goals were assisted by Heather Williams.

Yi Du made five saves for the Golden Eagles, while the Cal State L.A. defense also cleared an attempt away before it found the net.

The Seawolves had a 15-8 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks and took all six corners in the opening half.

Lammers put the Golden Eagles on the board in the 41st minute when she headed in a cross from Veronika Steen from about five yards away. It was Lammers' third goal of the season.

Sonoma State, though, tied it just three minutes later when Melissa LaFranchi knocked in a shot from 25 yards out for her second goal of the season.

Sonoma State had some early opportunities in the second half, but it was Cal State L.A. that struck for a pair of goals to take the lead. Arvidsson got the go-ahead score when she rebounded a shot from Williams that bounced off the crossbar. Arvidsson pounced on the rebound right in front and scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 58th minute.

Then, less than three minutes later, Williams sent a through pass to Pablo, who went in on a breakaway and scored from about 10 yards out. It was Pablo's first goal this season.

The Seawolves gave the Golden Eagles some anxious moments down the stretch. LaFranchi scored her second goal of the game when she got off a shot that was being tipped around in the box in the 79th minute to make it 3-2.

Du made a save on a shot by Alicia Mertz in the 84th minute and the Seawolves earned a pair of corner kicks in the 88th minute. A final attempt by Lauren Curtin was high in the 89th minute and Cal State L.A. was able to preserve the lead from there.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Humboldt State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
