Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team let a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match slip through its fingers Friday night in the Eagles Nest.
Cal State L.A. was unable to convert on any of its three match points in the fourth set and Cal State Monterey Bay rallied for a 25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 31-29, 15-11. Cal State L.A. (8-6, 3-3 CCAA) lost for the third straight time at home.
The Golden Eagles thought they had won the match when
Iona Lofrano's kill attempt appeared to be touched by a Monterey Bay player, but the call was overturned and ruled out and the Otters stayed alive.
After eventually taking the fourth set, the Otters raced out to a 7-0 lead in the fifth set and held off a late Cal State L.A. rally.
Lofrano had 25 kills and 16 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Kymberly Silveyra had 17 kills and 25 digs.
Bethanee Boggs had 13 kills and three blocks and
JamieAnn Bero had 10 kills and two blocks.
Julia Ashen had 30 kills to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (10-4, 4-2 CCAA), while Jessica Malcolm had eight kills, four blocks and 18 digs.
Cal State L.A. had a 71-53 edge in kills, but also had 41 attack errors and hit at a .149 clip. Cal State Monterey Bay had 22 attack errors and hit .171.
Cal State Monterey Bay had a big 15-5 edge in blocks, while Cal State L.A. had 12 service aces and nine errors, while the Otters had four aces and three errors.
April Reyes had a season-high 32 digs for Cal State L.A., while
Alexandra Bura had 53 set assists, 15 digs and two aces.
The Golden Eagles had leads in each of the first four sets, but could only close out two of them. Cal State L.A. opened up an early 15-9 lead in the opening set after consecutive kills by Bura, Boggs and Silveyra and still held a 21-17 lead after a kill by Lofrano. Cal State Monterey Bay, though, rallied from a 23-20 deficit by scoring the final five points of the set, closing it out after a block by Summer Esseff and DJ Gresham-Ryder and a bad set.
The Golden Eagles kept their big lead in the second set to even things up. An ace by
Loreal Carter gave the Golden Eagles a 21-12 lead, a kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to set point and a Cal State Monterey Bay attack error ended the set.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the third set as well, but then had to score the last four points of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. After falling behind 22-21, kills by Bero, Lofrano, Bero and Lofrano again gave the Golden Eagles a 25-22 win.
Cal State L.A. was in position to close out the match in four sets, taking a 21-17 lead after a kill by Bero. The Otters rallied to tie it at 23-23 and a kill by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles their first match point. That chance ended in a service error to tie it at 24-24.
A Lofrano kill gave the Golden Eagles their second set point at 25-24, but an Ashen kill tied it again at 25-25. Another kill by Lofrano made it 26-25, setting the stage for the apparent winning kill that was overruled, making it 26-26. The Golden Eagles fought off three set points themselves before kills by Lacee Ventura and Malcolm sent the match to a fifth set.
Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first seven points behind strong serving by Molly Kennedy and Cal State L.A. never recovered. The Golden Eagles pulled to within three points at 14-11 after an ace by Carter, but a solo block by Ashen ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m.
