SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team came up big in what was essentially a must-win California Collegiate Athletic Association game Friday.
The Golden Eagles got a goal in the 81st minute from Andrea Lammers and a strong defensive effort to beat Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, at Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (8-4-3, 6-4-3 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games and pulled to within two points of first-place Cal State San Bernardino (9-5-2, 7-4-2 CCAA) in the South Division.
The win was also big regionally as the Golden Eagles entered the week ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II West Region, while Cal State San Bernardino was ranked seventh. The victory also enabled the Golden Eagles to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Coyotes on Sept. 29 in Los Angeles.
Cal State L.A. is 5-0-2 since that game and has pulled itself back into the race for a spot in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles are currently second in the South Division and have the fourth-highest point total in the conference.
Cal State L.A. picked up a well-deserved victory on Friday. The Golden Eagles had a 17-9 edge in shots, including a 10-3 advantage in the first half.
Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Chelsey Jones, though, kept her team in the game thanks to seven saves, including three outstanding stops to prevent Cal State L.A. from grabbing the lead.
That is, until Lammers' sixth goal of the season that came in the 81st minute. Megan Ollar delivered a cross into the box and Lammers, from about 10 yards out, ripped a shot into the net for the game-winner.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Yi Du made four saves, including two in the final eight minutes to preserve the win. She stopped a shot by Paige Kang in the 83rd minute and by Kellie Valverde in the 87th minute.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for Du and the sixth of the year for the Golden Eagles.
Shea Richards had a match-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, while Heather Williams had three shots. Defenders Janeth Arroyo, Monique Cherry, Samantha Footlik and Janelle Hanna had strong games as well and the Golden Eagles allowed only nine shots and only four on goal.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Chico State at 11:30 a.m.
