Golden Eagles Settle For 1-1 Tie With CS East Bay

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had its chances in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State East Bay, but was forced to settle for a hard-fought tie.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the second half, but then got an equalizing goal from Andrea Lammers, but that was all the scoring in a 1-1 draw at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (5-4-2, 3-4-2 CCAA) ran its unbeaten streak to three matches, while Cal State East Bay (3-7-1, 3-5-1 CCAA) continued its strong play of late. The Pioneers were coming off a 2-1 overtime win over UC San Diego last Sunday.

Cal State L.A. had a 20-11 advantage in shots and was a bit unlucky in the match. The Golden Eagles had a pair of outstanding chances by Amalia Arvidsson hit the crossbar and not go in, while a running blast from Heather Williams in overtime was just high.

The Golden Eagles also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Yi Du made three saves, while Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Donna Williams made seven saves, including a sensational tip of a bid by Williams to deflect it over the crossbar late in the first half.

The Golden Eagles probably figured it would be a tough night when their first real scoring chance of the game, just five minutes into the game. Williams set up the play by dribbling through two defenders and her pass to Arvidsson was re-directed toward the goal, only to bounce off the crossbar, straight down, and then out of danger.

Williams again split a pair of Cal State East Bay defenders in the 35th minute, but her shot was tipped by Williams over the crossbar.

The Pioneers came out strongly in the second half and put good pressure on the Golden Eagles until finally breaking through in the 54th minute. Off a corner kick, Shannon Fontes got the ball to Megan Ravenscroft, who knocked it in through traffic and into the goal. It was Ravenscroft's second goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. began to generate some pressure following tbe Cal State Esat Bay goal. Veronika Steen had a bid go just over the crossbar and Arvidsson sent a shot just wide a minute later.

The Golden Eagles finally broke through in the 64th minute. A free kick by Arvidsson was shot toward the goal by Williams and deflected in right in front by Andrea Lammers. It was Lammers' fourth goal of the season.

The best opporunity of the two overtime periods came courtesy of a header by Arvidsson that again hit the crossbar and dropped straight down and out of the goal in the 105th minute. Williams had a bid one minute later that sailed high.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Stanislaus at 11:30 a.m.
