Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team passed another tough California Collegiate Athletic Association road test.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-point lead and survived repeated challenges late in the game and held off San Francisco State, 59-53, Saturday in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (11-4, 6-2 CCAA) remained in a tie for second place in the conference, one game behind conference-leading Chico State.
Tessondra Williams had a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while
Paige Melville had 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Melville hit a big 3-pointer late in the game to extend a one-point Cal State L.A. lead.
Alyssa Hanson had nine points and some clutch plays late in the game and
Richelle Najera had a game-high 12 rebounds.
San Francisco State (7-5, 4-4 CCAA) got 12 points from Angela Van Sickel and nine points and 11 rebounds from Farrah Shokoor.
Cal State L.A. shot 41.3 percent for the game (19-of-46) and limited San Francisco State to just 29 percent shooting (20-of-69). The Golden Eagles knocked down five of their 17 attempts from behind the 3-point range, while San Francisco State hit four of its 11 tries. The Golden Eagles were on the short-end of a 51-38 rebounding count, but made 16-of-23 free throws to just 9-of-19 for the Gators. Cal State L.A. hit 14-of-18 from the free-throw line in the second half.
The Golden Eagles committed 15 turnovers, while San Francisco State committed 13.
Cal State L.A. led for most of the game, but trailed early, 9-5. A pair of free throws by
Devin Riezebos and a layup by
Bree Parsons pushed the Golden Eagles to a 13-10 lead and Cal State L.A. took its biggest lead of the half after a layup by Williams made it 21-16. The Golden Eagles settled for a 21-19 halftime lead.
Cal State L.A. grabbed 10-point leads three times in the second half, the final time at 33-23 after a layup by
Maryum Jenkins with 14:28 to go. After San Francisco State closed to within one point at 49-48, Melville hit a key 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 52-48 lead with 1:53 remaining. Melville then rebounded a San Francisco State miss and assisted Hanson on a layup that made it 54-48 with 55 seconds left and two free throws by
Kelli Lewis made it 56-48 with 32 seconds to go. Melville hit two free throws and Hanson hit one free throw to complete the victory.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against first-place Chico State at 5:30 p.m.
