Golden Eagles Fall In Four Sets To San Francisco State

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team came up short Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in the Eagles Nest.
 
The Golden Eagles started slowly, showed some spark in the third set, but ultimately fell to San Francisco State, 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21. Cal State L.A. (5-8, 3-3 CCAA) dropped its second straight match this week.
 
San Francisco State (9-3, 4-1 CCAA) had a 53-43 edge in kills, outhit the Golden Eagles, .252-.132 and had a 9-5 edge in service aces. The Golden Eagles had a 10-7 advantage in blocks.
 
Loreal Carter had 14 kills and three blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Marquis Mora had 11 kills and seven blocks.
 
San Francisco State had three players reach double figures in kills. Megan Johnson had 14 kills and 12 digs, Kelly Ostello had 13 kills and Meagan Wright had 11 kills and three blocks.
 
The Golden Eagles fell behind quickly and found themselves down 11-5 in the opening set. Cal State L.A. surged and took a 16-15 lead after a kill by Carter, but San Francisco State scored the next three points and led the rest of the set. A strong serving run by Iris Tolenada finished out the set for the Gators.
 
The Golden Eagles continued their struggles in the second set. A kill by Colby Joseph tied the set at 11-11, but San Francisco State opened up a 20-13 advantage and held off a late charge by the Golden Eagles.
 
Cal State L.A. extended the match by hanging on to take the third set. After a kill by Mora, the Golden Eagles opened up an 18-12 lead. San Francisco State battled back and tied the set at 24-24, but a kill by Mora and a block by Mora and Alexandra Bura clinched the set for Cal State L.A.
 
The Golden Eagles couldn't sustain their momentum in the fourth set. After a kill by Samantha Potter tied it at 11-11, San Francisco State scored the next three points and led the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles fought off two match points after a kill by Carter and an attack error, but a kill by Ostello ended the match.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match against Sonoma State.
