Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team saw its shutout streak end, but the Golden Eagles made sure their winning streak didn't stop, also.
After Cal State Monterey Bay tied the score early in the second half, Tyler Perez knocked in the rebound of a shot by
Luis Trujillo in the 72nd minute and the Golden Eagles edged the Otters, 2-1, Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (6-2, 5-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight conference game since dropping its opener at Chico State.
The Golden Eagles hadn't allowed a goal since the first half of the Chico State game, but Cal State Monterey Bay pressured the Golden Eagles throughout the contest and got the equalizer in the 53rd minute. Cal State L.A. regrouped after that, though, and finally put away the Otters. Cal State Monterey Bay (0-6, 0-5 CCAA) continued its recent string of playing the top teams in the conference on extremely even terms.
Cal State L.A. had a slim 15-13 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers -- Cal State Monterey Bay's Cory Calder and Cal State L.A.'s
Waleed Cassis -- made five saves.
Rosario Bras opened the scoring in the 29th minute when he notched his sixth goal of the season.
Erik Vargas started the play with a pass to
Adam Hughes, who got the ball to Bras just inside the box. Bras lofted a perfectly placed shot just inside the far post to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
The score held up until the 53rd minute when Cal State Monterey Bay got the equalizer. Julian Salas did the scoring honors, drilling a shot inside the near post after a cross by George Plakorus eluded a pair of Cal State L.A. defenders and found Salas alone just inside the box.
The Golden Eagles stepped up their pressure following the Cal State Monterey Bay goal and eventually tied the game on a goal by Perez.
Jordan Payne started the play with a strong run and got the ball to Trujillo, who drilled a hard shot that appeared headed toward the goal. Calder made an outstanding save to deflect the shot, but Perez pounced on the rebound knocked it into the goal. The goal was the second goal of the season for Perez.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino next Friday.
