Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team recorded consecutive wins for the first time this season, but it certainly wasn't easy for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. had to come up big down the stretch of each set before pulling out a 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday in the Eagles Nest. The Golden Eagles didn't trail while winning the first two sets, but really had to battle in a third set that saw seven lead changes and 11 ties.
Cal State L.A. (5-6, 3-1 CCAA) moved into a large tie for second in a tightly-contested CCAA. The Golden Eagles split road matches at Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego to open conference play and then captured their first two home conference matches this week.
Marquis Mora had 12 kills and five blocks to lead Cal State L.A. She hit at a .500 percentage.
Loreal Carter added 11 kills and three blocks while hitting at a .474 clip.
Cal State Monterey Bay (6-6, 0-4 CCAA) got a match-high 16 kills from Julia Ashen and nine kills from Jessica Malcolm.
Alexandra Bura had 35 set assists, eight digs and three kills for Cal State L.A., while
April Reyes had a team-high 15 digs.
The Golden Eagles hit at a .336, which is a new single-match high for the season. Cal State Monterey Bay hit at a .250 clip. The Golden Eagles had a slim 46-43 edge in kills and a 6-4 advantage in blocks.
The Golden Eagles started quickly in the opening set and took a 15-9 lead following a block by Mora and Carter. The Golden Eagles still held a 20-15 lead before Cal State Monterey Bay began chipping away and eventually pulled to within 24-22 following an ace by Leana Moleta. After a Cal State L.A. timeout, the Golden Eagles closed out the set following a Cal State Monterey Bay attack error.
The second set played out much like the first. Cal State L.A. jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead following back-to-back kills by
Kymberly Silveyra and Carter. Cal State Monterey Bay, though, kept battling back and eventually sliced a 22-16 deficit to just 23-22. A kill by Reyes and an ace by Mora ended the set in dramatic fashion for the Golden Eagles.
The third set was tight throughout. A kill by
Reanna Hill gave the Golden Eagles a 21-18 lead and a kill by
Samantha Potter made it 22-19. The Otters closed to within 23-22 following a kill by Ashen, but a kill by Carter and an attack error ended the match for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
