Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got things rolling after the intermission Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State East Bay.
After splitting the first two sets, the Golden Eagles put it all together in a 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15 victory Friday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-6, 2-1 CCAA) was playing its first conference match at home after last week's road split at Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
Cal State East Bay (5-5, 0-3 CCAA) remained winless in conference play, although all three losses have been on the road. The Pioneers have yet to play a home conference match.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .295 percentage and limited Cal State East Bay to .128 hitting. The Golden Eagles had a 56-43 advantage in kills, a 54-40 edge in digs and a 7-6 advantage in service aces. Cal State East Bay had an 11-8 edge in blocking.
Marquis Mora, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, had 13 kills and four blocks and hit at a .476 percentage.
Kymberly Silveyra had 12 kills and hit at a .296 clip, while
Loreal Carter had 12 kills and four blocks.
Suzy Ni Xu had a match-high 15 kills and added two service aces and six blocks for the Pioneers. Hannah Bell had nine kills and four blocks.
Alexandra Bura had 43 set assists and seven digs for Cal State L.A. while
April Reyes had a team-high 15 digs. Bura, Reyes and
Sukhjit Athwal had two service aces each for the Golden Eagles. Athwal also had eight kills and three blocks.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to an 18-10 lead while winning the first set, eventually wrapping up the set on a block by Athwal and Mora. Cal State East Bay, though, regrouped and took the second set to even the match. An ace by Xu got the Pioneers to set point at 24-21 and, after a kill by Mora extended the set, a kill by Jade Sanford ended it.
The Golden Eagles trailed 12-8 in the third set, but a kill by Bura and back-to-back aces by Bura started the comeback. A block by
Reanna Hill and Athwal tied it at 12-12 and Cal State L.A. used a block by Mora and Carter, a block by Mora and Silveyra and a block by Mora and Carter to take a 17-14 lead. Back-to-back kills by
Iona Lofrano and Mora stretched the lead to 21-17 and a kill by Athwal surrounded by hitting errors by the Pioneers brought the Golden Eagles to match point. A kill by Athwal eventually ended it.
Cal State L.A. took charge early in the fourth set and promptly opened up an 18-10 lead behind a strong serving run by Athwal. The Golden Eagles kept a safe lead the rest of the way and ended the match on a kill by Mora.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match on Saturday night against Cal State Monterey Bay.
