Golden Eagles' Hopes For Rare CCAA Road Sweep Fall Short

Box Score LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had its chances for the rarest of California Collegiate Athletic Association road sweeps, only to fall just short at UC San Diego on Saturday night.

One night after ending Cal State San Bernardino's 44-match home conference winning streak, the Golden Eagles had the Tritons on the ropes before UC San Diego survived in a 28-26, 24-26, 28-26, 25-23 battle in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (3-6, 1-1 CCAA) had four set points in the pivotal third set and the Golden Eagles had leads in all four sets.

UC San Diego (6-4, 1-1 CCAA) salvaged a weekend split at home after falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.

The match was a titanic struggle for both teams. There were 45 tie scores during the four sets and 24 lead changes. Only one of the four sets was decided with the prevailing team scoring 25 points. It was a see-saw affair that finally swung in UC San Diego's favor late in the third and fourth sets.

The Golden Eagles, who hit at a season-best .330 percentage in their win at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, weren't nearly as efficient on Saturday. Cal State L.A. hit at a .153 percentage with 52 kills and 30 errors. UC San Diego had 67 kills and a .256 percentage.

Cal State L.A. had a big edge in blocking, 12-7, and also had nine aces to just one for the Tritons.

Marquis Mora had another big night for the Golden Eagles, leading the way with 12 kills, 11 blocks and three service aces. Loreal Carter had 10 kills and four blocks, while Kymberly Silveyra had 10 kills and 14 digs.

Danielle Dahle and Sara McCutchan had 18 kills each for the Tritons, while Lauren Demos had 17 kills.

Alexandra Bura had 34 set assists and five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while April Reyes had a team-high 16 digs

The Golden Eagles opened up a 21-15 lead in the opening set after a kill by Silveyra, a block by Bura and Reanna Hill and a kill by Mora, but the Tritons scored the next six points to knot things up. Hill had three consecutive kills to get the Golden Eagles to set point at 26-25, but UC San Diego won the final three points to take the set.

Cal State L.A. had to rally in the second set. The Golden Eagles trailed 13-9, but claimed a 15-14 lead after an ace by Silveyra. The Golden Eagles fought off a set point on a UC San Diego attack error, got to set point after another UC San Diego miscue and wrapped up the set on a kill by Samantha Potter.

Cal State L.A. put itself in good position to take the third set after opening up a 19-14 edge, but UC San Diego tied things up at 20-20 and set up another tight finish. A Potter kill gave the Golden Eagles a 24-22 edge, but the Tritons fought off the set points. A Carter kill gave the Golden Eagles another set point at 25-24, but a service error tied things up again. The Golden Eagles got their final set point at 26-25, but UC San Diego scored three straight points to take the set.

The Golden Eagles had leads of 10-6 and 12-9 in the fourth set and held their final advantage at 19-18 after a kill by Mora. A block by Mora and Shea Hamilton tied things at 20-20 and a kill by Sukhjit Athwal made it 21-21, but the Tritons scored the next two points to take the lead for good. A kill by Carter staved off the first match point and made it 24-23, but a service error ended the contest.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State East Bay.
