Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got its 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule off to a roaring start.
The Golden Eagles played by far their best match of the season and swept No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino, 25-14, 25-21, 25-8 Friday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State L.A. (3-5, 1-0 CCAA) snapped the Coyotes' 44-match home conference winning streak that dated back to 2007.
It was also the first Cal State L.A. victory against the Coyotes in San Bernardino since 2000.
Cal State L.A. hit at a season-high percentage of .330 and had a 40-30 advantage in kills. The Golden Eagles also had a 7-2 advantage in blocks, a 5-1 edge in service aces and only had four service errors compared to 10 for the Coyotes (3-6, 0-1 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles held Cal State San Bernardino (3-6, 0-1 CCAA), which has won six straight CCAA titles, to just .096 hitting.
Marquis Mora led a balanced Cal State L.A. attack with 12 kills and four blocks. She hit at a .435 percentage.
Kymberly Silveyra had eight kills and 13 digs,
Loreal Carter had eight kills and a .571 hitting percentage and
Sukhjit Athwal had seven kills and six digs.
Mercedes Winchester had 12 kills to lead Cal State San Bernardino.
Alexandra Bura had 32 set assists and five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
April Reyes had a team-high 17 digs.
The Golden Eagles set the tone for the evening early, cruising to a big win in the opening set. A strong serving run by Silveyra that was highlighted by a block by Bura and Mora, a kill by Mora, another block by Bura and Mora and a kill by Athwal helped the Golden Eagles open up a 17-7 advantage. A kill by Carter got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-12 and a service error by the Coyotes ultimately ended the opening set.
The Golden Eagles opened up a quick 7-1 lead in the second set, but Cal State San Bernardino battled back and tied the set twice at 16-16 and 17-17. A service error and attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead back and they never relinquished it. Two kills by Silveyra and a kill by
Reanna Hill got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and Cal State L.A. ended the set on a kill by Athwal.
Cal State L.A. put the game away with a dominating third set. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 19-4 lead and never let up. With
Colby Joseph serving, Carter had three kills and a block to break the set open. A kill by Mora got the Golden Eagles to match point and Cal State L.A. completed its big win on an attack error.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match at UC San Diego.
