Box Score 2 MONMOUTH, ORE. – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had its impressive moments, but ultimately was unable to take a fifth set in either of two hard-fought matches at the Western Oregon Invitational on Thursday.
After being unable to hold a 12-5 fifth-set lead against Western Oregon in the opening match, the Golden Eagles stormed back from a 2-0 deficit before Western Washington took the deciding set in a 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 29-31, 15-9 decision. Cal State L.A. (0-2) will conclude play in the tournament with a pair of matches on Friday.
Marquis Mora had 16 kills for Cal State L.A. against Western Washington, while
Kymberly Silveyra had 15 kills.
Alexandra Bura had 45 set assists.
Kaitlynd Carroll had a team-high 19 digs.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .207 clip in the match with 61 kills, but struggled at the service line with three aces and 13 errors.
The Golden Eagles displayed a lot of heart in the loss to Western Washington. After dropping the first two sets, Cal State L.A. rallied from a 19-16 deficit in both the third and fourth sets to extend the match. A strong serving run by Mora erased the deficit in the third set. She tied the set with an ace and ultimately served the Golden Eagles to a 21-19 lead. Cal State L.A. fell behind, 23-22, but a kill by Silveyra and two attack errors sent the match to a fourth set.
Cal State L.A. again fell behind 19-16, but rallied to take a 24-23 lead after back-to-back kills by Mora. The Golden Eagles staved off a match point at 25-24 thanks to a kill by Mora and again at 28-27 after a kill by Silveyra. Back-to-back kills by
Iona Lofrano gave the Golden Eagles the set at 31-29.
Cal State L.A. fell behind once again in the fifth set, only this time the Golden Eagles couldn't recover. A kill by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles their final lead at 5-4, but Western Washington scored the next three points and never looked back.
The Golden Eagles had victory in their grasp in the opener. but it slipped away in stunning fashion. After Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the fifth and final set, Western Oregon rolled off the final eight points of the match and stunned the Golden Eagles, 24-26, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12.
Iona Lofrano led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills and 10 digs, while
Kymberly Silveyra had 14 kills and 11 digs.
Sukhjit Athwal had 12 kills, three blocks and two service aces and
Reanna Hill had eight kills and four blocks.
Alexandra Bura had 40 set assists, 10 digs and three service aces, while
Marquis Mora added five kills, five digs and two blocks.
Samantha Ward had 19 kills to lead Western Oregon, which has been picked to finish second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Danielle Reese added 11 kills.
Cal State L.A. had a 54-48 edge in kills, but also had 33 hitting errors and a hitting percentage of just .126. The Golden Eagles also had 18 service errors. Western Oregon had a 12-6 advantage in blocks.
The Golden Eagles will certainly lament the end to the season opener. Cal State L.A. shook off a slow start and won the opening set, 26-24, on a kill by Hill. The Golden Eagles fought back from a 24-22 deficit by scoring the final four points of the set.
After dropping the second set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 21-14 lead in the third set and held off a late Western Oregon rally. After Silveyra's kill gave the Golden Eagles the late seven-point edge, the Wolves closed to within 24-22 before a kill by Mora ended the set.
Cal State L.A. fell behind early in the fourth set and trailed 18-13 at one point. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 21-19 but couldn't get any closer.
That set up the fifth and deciding set. The Golden Eagles scored five straight points to break a 7-7 tie and appeared on their way to a victory. A service ace by Bura, a kill by Silveyra, a block by Hill and Sukhjit and a kill by Athwal sparked the surge.
Western Oregon, though, got the serve back following a service error and Becky Blees was able to serve out the match with seven consecutive points.
