Box Score SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got a sensational career night from
Jordan Richard, but the Golden Eagles also had to absorb a disappointing overtime loss to Cal State San Bernardino.
Richard posted career highs for points with 20 and rebounds with 17, but the Golden Eagles were outscored in the overtime period, 11-4, and lost to the Coyotes, 76-69, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Coussoulis Anrea. Cal State L.A. (2-3, 1-2 CCAA) dropped its second overtime game of the season.
Richard also had six blocks to go with his 20 points and 17 rebounds. He had a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double in the first half alone. The Golden Eagles led by four points, 38-34, at halftime and by eight points, 51-43, with 11:30 to go.
Willie Trimble had a season-high 17 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles,
James Tillman had 12 points and five rebounds and
Joshua Munzon had nine points.
Lacy Haddock had 17 points to lead Cal State San Bernardino (3-1, 3-0 CCAA). Brian Goins added 13 points, Joshua Gouch had 11 points and Pablo Genavo had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68), while Cal State San Bernardino shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-18 from 3-point range (38.9 percent) and Cal State San Bernardino was 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from behind the arc. Cal State L.A. made 6-of-11 free-throw attempts, wihle Cal State San Bernardino was 19-of-23.
The Golden Eagles had a 48-36 rebounding edge, but also committed 17 turnovers to only six for the Coyotes.
Cal State L.A. got a 3-pointer from
Quinton Watkins and a dunk from Richard to open up a 17-12 lead and a layup by
Julian Camper gave the Golden Eagles a 22-17 edge. After Cal State San Bernardino scored five straight points to tie it, a 3-pointer by Munzon gave the Golden Eagles a 25-22 edge. A rare 3-pointer by Richard gave the Golden Eagles a 33-32 and he followed that up with a dunk to make it 35-32. Trimble knocked down a 3-pointer to close the half and give the Golden Eagles a 38-34 halftime edge.
A three-point play by Richard broke a 39-39 tie and started a 12-4 run that gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the night. Richard hit another basket and Trimble followed with a 3-pointer for a 49-42 lead and a basket by Tillman made it 51-43 with 11:38 remaining.
Cal State San Bernardino responded with a big run of its own and grabbed a 59-56 lead before a 3-pointer by Trimble tied it again at 59-59. A layup by Tillman tied it at 61-61 with 2:41 to go and a layup by
Cheyanne Alcala gave the Golden Eagles a 63-61 lead with 2:14 to go. After the Coyotes tied it again, Trimble scored a go-ahead basket with 58 seconds to go for the Golden Eagles' final lead of the night.
Cal State San Bernardino tied it thanks to a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left and then never trailed in the overtime period.
A free throw by Trimble tied it at 66-66, but Cal State San Bernardino scored the next four points and never trailed again. Tillman scored to make it 70-68 and hit a later free throw to make it 72-69, but the Coyotes scored the final four points of the game to account for the final margin.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Monday, Dec. 10, with a home game against Pacifica College beginning at 4 p.m.
