Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team wobbled a bit toward the end, but was still able to post a three-set sweep over Humboldt State Friday night in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles needed seven match points before finally putting away the 'Jacks, 25-20, 25-21, 29-27 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State L.A. (13-13, 11-8 CCAA) won its third consecutive match and its second in three days.
Samantha Potter had a match-high 13 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Sukhjit Athwal had 12 kills and
Marquis Mora had 10 kills, three blocks and five aces, including serves that ended the second and third sets.
Alexandra Bura had five kills and 40 set assists, while
Kaitlynd Carroll had 12 digs and five assists.
Alexa Rosendale had 12 kills for Humboldt State (3-23, 1-18 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles had a 53-35 advantage in kills and hit at a .339 percentage while limiting Humboldt State to just .179 hitting. Cal State L.A. also had a 5-3 edge in blocks, while both teams had six service aces.
All three sets were competitive throughout. The Golden Eagles broke an 11-11 tie in the opening set on a kill by Bura, an attack error and kills by Athwal and Mora and led the rest of the frame. Humboldt State closed to within 16-15 before kills by Athwal and
Loreal Carter bumped the lead back to three points at 18-15. The 'Jacks were still within striking distance at 19-17 when the Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills from Potter and an attack error to take a 22-17 lead. A Potter kill got it to 23-19, a kill by
Reanna Hill got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and a kill by Athwal closed it out at 25-20.
The Golden Eagles trailed early in the second set and were down, 15-14, before a kill by Carter, an attack error and a block by Hill and Bura put them ahead for good. A kill by Mora made it 23-20, a Potter kill made it 24-21 and an ace by Mora gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 24-20 lead in the third set, only to see Humboldt State score five straight points to take a 25-24 lead. The Golden Eagles fought off a set point thanks to a kill by
Kymberly Silveyra and got to another set point at 26-25 following a block by Mora and Carter. A kill by Potter got the Golden Eagles to another match point at 27-26, but Humboldt State again foiught it off. A kill by Potter got the Golden Eagles to another match point at 28-27 and an ace by Mora finally ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona.
