Golden Eagles Are Unable To Overcome This Slow Start

Box Score LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team had been surviving slow starts in three of its four previous games, but the Golden Eagles couldn't overcome a dreadful beginning to Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles allowed the first 15 points of the game and never recovered while dropping a 70-49 decision to the Tritons in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (4-1, 1-1 CCAA) suffered its first loss of the season and was unable to survive an ice-cold shooting performance.

Tessondra Williams was the only player to have a productive game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 21 points. She was the only Cal State L.A. player to reach double figures.

UC San Diego (3-5, 1-0 CCAA) got 21 points from Daisy Feder, 14 points from Miranda Seto and a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double from Erin Dautremont.

Cal State L.A. was coming off a program-record shooting performance against Point Loma last Saturday, but could not duplicate that prowess on Friday. The Golden Eagles made only 18-of-61 shots (29.5 percent) and connected on only three of their 18 attempts from 3-point range. UC San Diego made 22 of its 50 field-goal attempts (44 percent) and also made 20-of-23 free-throw attempts.

Cal State L.A. had a 42-36 rebounding edge, including 19 offensive rebounds, but the Golden Eagles committed 20 turnovers to just 15 for the Tritons.

UC San Diego jumped out to a 15-0 lead and didn't allow a basket until Williams scored with 14:28 remaining in the first half. Cal State L.A. fell behind by as many as 23 points at 36-13 with six minutes remaining in the half before showing some signs of life. The Golden Eagles closed the half with a 13-2 run to pull to within 12 points, 38-26, at halftime. Williams made a layup to start the run and Bree Parsons added a free throw. Paige Melville hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Williams made a pair of layups to close the half.

Cal State L.A. scored the first four points of the second half -- all by Williams -- to pull to within 38-30 with 18 minutes to go. A layup by Samantha Hansen made it a 40-32 count with 16:55 remaining, but UC San Diego scored the next eight points to take a 48-32 advantage and led comfortably the rest of the way.

Melville finished with eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Richelle Najera had five points and six rebounds.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
