Golden Eagles Outlast Cal Poly Pomona In Five Sets

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team survived a big rallly from Cal Poly Pomona and posted a thrilling five-set victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Associaiton match in the Eagles Nest.

The Golden Eagles won the first two sets, but needed to score the final three points of the match to beat the Broncos, 25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 22-25, 17-15. Facing a match point at 15-14, the Golden Eagles got a kill from Loreal Carter, an attack error by the Broncos and a match-clinching kill by Samantha Potter.

Cal State L.A. (14-13, 12-8 CCAA) moved above .500 for the first time this season and recorded a difficult sweep over the Broncos. Both wins by the Golden Eagles came in five-set marathons.

Marquis Mora had 15 kills, four aces and seven blocks for the Golden Eagles, who won their fourth straight match. Sukhjit Athwal had 12 kills, 17 digs and five blocks and Potter finished with 12 kills.

Jessica Doehner led Cal Poly Pomona (13-14, 9-11 CCAA) with 20 kills. Diana Lake had 16 kills, Alexa Hasen had 14 kills and Taylr Kreutziger had 11 kills and five blocks.

Carter had 10 kills and six blocks, while Reanna Hill had nine kills and four blocks. April Reyes had 19 digs and four aces and Alexandra Bura had 48 set assists.

Cal Poly Pomona had a 70-59 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .246-.231. Cal State L.A. had big edges in service aces (10-5) and blocks (15-8).

The Golden Eagles started well and promptly took a 2-0 lead in sets. In the opening frame, the Golden Eagles scored the final five points to turn a 20-17 lead into a 25-17 edge. Kills by Athwal and Mora were followed by an ace by Reyes. Another kill by Athwal got the Golden Eagles to set point and Reyes served an ace to end the set.

Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the second set, only to see Cal Poly Pomona close to within 21-20. A block by Hill stopped the Broncos' run and a kill by Athwal made it 23-20. A block by Athwal made it 24-20 and a kill by Bura ended the set.

Cal Poly Pomona won the next two sets to tie the match and the two squads battled through a tense fifth set to settle the match. Cal State L.A. opened up a 5-1 lead, only to see Cal Poly Pomona go on a run to take a 7-6 lead. A Mora kill gave the Golden Eagles a 12-10 lead, but the Broncos rallied to tie it and then got to match point after a Cal State L.A. attack error. Carter, though, came up with a clutch kill ti tie it at 15-15, an attack error by the Broncos got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by Potter ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Chico State.
