Box Score HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team took awhile to get going, but once the Golden Eagles got rolling Thursday night, there was no stopping them.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first two sets and then stormed back for a 18-25, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-9 win over Cal State East Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (10-11, 8-6 CCAA) snapped a two-match losing streak and won its fifth straight match on the road. The Golden Eagles, after dropping their first four five-set decisions this season, won their third consecutive five-set match.
Sukhjit Athwal, who played previously at Cal State East Bay, had a season-high 17 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Kymberly Silveyra had 14 kills and 15 digs.
Marquis Mora had 13 kills and five blocks.
Cal State East Bay (8-13, 3-11 CCAA) got 11 kills each from Hannah Bell, Samantha Bruno and Nikki Long.
Cal State L.A. had a 61-58 edge in kills and an 11-4 advantage in blocks. All the blocks came in the final three sets for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. also hit at a .232 percentage while holding Cal State East Bay to .208. After Cal State East Bay hit at a .317 clip in the first set and a .348 percentage in the second set, the Golden Eagles held the Pioneers to .154 hitting in the third set, .143 hitting in the fourth set and .115 in the final set.
Alexandra Bura had 42 set assists, two aces and 12 digs, while
April Reyes had a match-high 26 digs.
After a slow start in the first two sets, Cal State L.A. was able to turn the match around with an outstanding performance in the third set. The Golden Eagles hit at a .483 percentage in the third set and had 15 kills in the set with just one error. The Golden Eagles didn't trail in the third or fourth sets and used a 9-0 run in the fifth set to erase a 6-4 deficit.
The Golden Eagles erased any Cal State East Bay hopes for a sweep by racing out to a 21-10 lead in the third set. Two kills by Silveyra and an ace by Reyes opened up the big lead and, after a Mora kill got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-13, an ace by Silveyra ended the set.
Cal State L.A. opened up an 18-9 lead in the fourth set following an ace by Bura and a kill by
Reanna Hill gave the Golden Eagles a 20-13 lead. After Cal State East Bay rallied to close to within 22-19, a block by Mora stopped the Pioneers' run. A kill by Bura got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Athwal sent the match to a fifth set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 6-4, but turned the match around again with a big 9-0 run. A block by Athwal and a kill by Silveyra got the Golden Eagles even and a kill by Athwal put the Golden Eagles ahead, 7-6. Athwal then contributed another block and a kill by
Loreal Carter made it 9-6. Two straight kills by Athwal pushed the lead to 11-6 and a bad set and a kill by Carter made it 13-6.
Another kill from Athwal got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-7 and the Golden Eagles won the contest on their third match point after a Cal State East Bay service error.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
