Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had some moments of excellence on Saturday night, but simply couldn't sustain them as long as Cal State San Bernardino could.
The Golden Eagles were seeking a season sweep of the six-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions, but the Coyotes had other ideas in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 decision in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-11, 7-6 CCAA) dropped its second straight match to fall four games behind the first-place Coyotes (14-7, 11-2 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. started slowly for the second straight night, but did rebound to play better than it did in a loss to UC San Diego on Friday. It just wasn't good enough to beat first-place Cal State San Bernardino for a second time this season.
The Golden Eagles opened the CCAA season with a stunning 25-14, 25-21, 25-8 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in San Bernardino, ending the Coyotes' 44-match conference home winning streak. Revenge was clearly on the Coyotes' minds on Saturday and they partook in a spirited celebration after the final point was won.
Kymberly Silveyra had 11 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Samantha Potter had nine kills and two blocks.
Marquis Mora was limited to six kills, but was once again a big factor at the net, collecting a match-high seven blocks.
Alexandra Torline had 12 kills to lead the Coyotes, while Mercedes Winchester had 10 kills. Camille Smith had 29 set assists to go along with two kills, two service aces and two solo blocks.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 38-32 advantage in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .235-.082. Cal State L.A. held a slim 8.5 – 7 edge in blocks and both teams had four aces.
Alexandra Bura had 27 set assists for the Golden Eagles to go along with two aces and three blocks, while
April Reyes had a match-high 13 digs.
Cal State L.A. dug itself a huge hole in the first set, falling behind 14-4. The Coyotes got to set point at 24-15 before the Golden Eagles showed some signs of life. A kill by
Loreal Carter, a block by Mora and Potter, a block by Mora and Carter and a kill by Potter prompted a Cal State San Bernardino timeout at 24-19. A kill by Ashley Solis ended the set for the Coyotes.
The next two sets were close until the late stages when the Golden Eagles faltered and the Coyotes took full advantage. A block by Mora and Carter and a block by Mora and Potter gave the Golden Eagles a 20-16 lead in the second set, but Cal State San Bernardino scored the final nine points of the frame.
Cal State L.A. led as late as 18-17 in the third set after a kill by Silveyra, but Cal State San Bernardino scored the next five points to take control and was able to finish the sweep.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Thursday with a conference match at Cal State East Bay.
