Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team saw the momentum it had from a four-match winning streak accomplished all on the road come crashing to a halt Friday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The Golden Eagles struggled mightily in the opening set and never could recover in a disappointing 25-13, 25-21, 26-24 loss to No. 25 UC San Diego in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-10, 7-5 CCAA) missed out on an opportunity to pick up ground on one of the teams ahead of it in the CCAA standings.
The Golden Eagles seemed poised to send the match to a fourth set, but UC San Diego (14-6, 9-3 CCAA) battled back from a 23-21 deficit and, after gaining a match point at 25-24, won the match on a service ace by Kameron Cooper.
Marquis Mora had another strong performance and posted a match-high 12 kills and four blocks.
Samantha Potter had six kills and a team-high 13 digs.
Danielle Dahle had eight kills and three blocks to lead a balanced UC San Diego attack. Although the Tritons didn't have anyone to match Mora, they had five players with six kills or more and a sixth player, setter Amber Hawthorne, had four kills to go along with 29 set assists and 10 digs.
UC San Diego had a 38-33 edge in kills and held the Golden Eagles to a 9-9 draw in blocks. The Tritons had five service aces and four errors compared to the Golden Eagles' two aces and six errors. The digs were even, 43-43.
UC San Diego outhit Cal State L.A., .189-.110.
Cal State L.A. held a 10-9 lead in the opening set, but then fell apart and was outscored, 15-3, to end the frame. Three straight attack errors led the Tritons to set point and a kill by Dahle ended it.
The second set was much closer and Cal State L.A. opened up an 18-16 lead before UC San Diego scored four straight points and led the rest of the way. An ace by
Kymberly Silveyra made it 23-21, but the Tritons got a block by Dahle and Cooper and a kill by Dahle to take a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 15-10 lead in the third set following a kill by Silveyra, a kill by Mora, an ace by Potter, a block by
Sukhjit Athwal and Mora and a kill by Potter and got a kill by Mora to make it 22-20 and a kill by Potter to make it 23-21 before UC San Diego scored the next three points to get to match point. A kill by
Alexandra Bura made it 24-24, but UC San Diego scored two straight points to win the match.
Cal State L.A. will host Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night. It is “Think Pink” night as part of the conference's “Dig for a Cure” program.
