Golden Eagles Post Important 1-0 Victory Over Coyotes

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got back on track Sunday afternoon with an important victory over a California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division opponent.

The Golden Eagles posted their fifth shutout in their last six games and got a first-half goal from Raquel Gervas to beat Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (6-4-4, 5-4-3 CCAA) completed a season sweep of the Coyotes and moved back into second place in the CCAA South Division.

Cal State L.A. also posted a 1-0 victory over the Coyotes in San Bernardino on Sept. 28.

Cal State L.A.'s performance was a carry-over from Friday's tough 1-0 loss at UC San Diego in a game the Golden Eagles dominated after falling behind early. Cal State L.A. peppered UC San Diego's defense for 21 shots in that one, including 14 in the second half.

The Golden Eagles didn't have that many chances on Sunday against Cal State San Bernardino (7-5-2, 5-5-1 CCAA), but Cal State L.A. dictated play for much of the 90 minutes, just like it did on Friday.

Cal State L.A. had a 10-7 advantage in shots and all three corner kicks in the contest.

Gervas got the only goal of the game in the 13th minute, heading in a corner kick from Megan Ollar for her first goal of the season. Cal State L.A. had a 5-1 advantage in shots in an impressive first half.

The second half featured good scoring opportunities for both sides, but the 1-0 score held. Cal State L.A.'s Andrea Lammers had the best chance of the second period, sending a shot from inside the box toward the goal with Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Priscilla Collings out. The ball, though, went off the crossbar and the score remained 1-0.

Cal State San Bernardino then put together its best pressure of the match. Kelly Hayes got a step on the Cal State L.A. defense and let loose of a shot that Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Gabriella Batmani collected from the top of the penalty box.

Moments later, Emily Mardon had a strong bid, but Batmani made a diving save to preserve the shutout.

Cal State San Bernardino got one last attempt, but Makayla Varner's shot was wide in the 89th minute.

Batmani finished with three saves for the Golden Eagles, while Collings had two saves for the Coyotes.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match against Humboldt State beginning at 2 p.m. This is a chance from the original starting time of 7 p.m.
