Golden Eagles Take Control Early In Big Win Over Broncos

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team used a dominating performance to earn a big win over a longtime nemesis.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 19-point halftime lead and never looked back in a 75-65 win over No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-5, 9-3 CCAA) won its fourth straight game and completed its first sweep of home conference games since 2006.

The Golden Eagles did it against a program they have had little success against over the years. Cal State L.A. entered the contest with a 5-72 record all-time against Cal Poly Pomona and had lost 24 of the last 26 meetings.

Saturday was a different story. Cal State L.A. executed its game plan from the start and raced to a 46-27 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles held a double-digit advantage all the way until the final minute when a late Cal Poly Pomona rush sliced the advantage to six points.

Cal State L.A. took over sole possession of third place in the conference race, while Cal Poly Pomona (12-4, 8-4 CCAA) stays in a fourth-place tie with Humboldt State.

Lacy Ramon led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds. She hit seven of 12 field-goal attempts, including both of her 3-point tries. She also made 10-of-12 free-throws.

Alyssa Hanson also had a strong game with 11 points, while Maryum Jenkins had 10 points. Erika Ruiz chipped in with eight points, all in the first half, when the Golden Eagles took early control of the game. All 10 Golden Eagles who played scored.

Sarah Semenero led the Broncos with 23 points and nine rebounds.

Cal State L.A. turned in a strong defensive showing, holding Cal Poly Pomona to just 31.3 percent shooting, including just 28.6 percent (8-of-28) in the first half. The Broncos were just 4-of-20 from 3-point range.

Cal State L.A., on the other hand, shot 47.9 percent for the game (23-of-48) and knocked down half of its 12 attempts from 3-point range.

Cal Poly Pomona had a 40-37 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 20 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. hit Cal Poly Pomona with a game-opening 8-0 blitz and never looked back. Jenkins hit a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a basket by Ramon. A 3-pointer by Ramon gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead of the game at 15-5 and the Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the game at 46-25, in the final minute of the half. Cal State L.A. settled for a 46-27 halftime lead.

The Broncos cut the lead down to 13 points at 48-33 after a basket by Rosslyn Beard with 16:40 to go, but the Golden Eagles scored the next eight points to regain their 21-point edge, 56-35, with 10 minutes to go. Ramon started the run with a basket, Hanson and Jazzi Johnson scored baskets and Ramon finished the run with another bucket.

The Golden Eagles answered every challenge the remainder of the way. Cal Poly Pomona eventually got as close as six points at 67-61 with under a minute left, but a pair of free throws by Hanson essentially put the game away. A free throw by Lacey Gibbons, two free throws by Ramon and another free throw by Hanson completed the scoring.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
