Golden Eagles Use Big Second Half To Run Past Gators

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team kept the good times rolling Friday night in their return to the Eagles Nest.
 
The Golden Eagles won their third straight game with an 82-59 victory over San Francisco State Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State L.A. (10-5, 8-3 CCAA) remains in a third-place tie with Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State in conference play. Friday's game marked the halfway point of the conference race.
 
Erika Ruiz scored 12 points to lead a balanced Cal State L.A. attack. Jazzi Johnson added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists and Samantha Hansen finished with 10 points and three rebounds. The Golden Eagles got scoring from 13 players on Friday and contributions from all 14 players who saw time on the court.
 
Angela Van Sickel scored a game-high 25 points to lead San Francisco State (4-13, 3-8 CCAA). Charnay Bell and Candyce Matthews had nine points each.
 
Cal State L.A. shot 50.8 percent for the game (32-of-63) and knocked down 63.3 percent of its shots in the second half (19-of-30). San Francisco State shot 37.5 percent for the game (24-of-64).
 
The Gators had a 42-39 rebounding edge. San Francisco State had 16 turnovers to 12 for the Golden Eagles.
 
Cal State L.A. was also effective from 3-point range, hitting nine 3-pointers in the game. Ruiz, Tessondra Williams and Amanda Deal had two each, while Maryum Jenkins, Lorin Hammer and Lacey Gibbons each made one.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed early by five points, but built leads as large as 25 points in the second half.
 
San Francisco State took an early 9-4 lead, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 9-0 run. A 3-pointer by Williams started the surge, which was followed by a basket by Johnson that tied the game. Four straight points by Lacy Ramon gave the Golden Eagles a 13-9 edge.
 
San Francisco State got a 3-pointer by Van Sickel to tie it at 17-17 and took its last lead on a basket by Farrah Shokoor at 19-17 with eight minutes remaining in the half.
 
Cal State L.A. then went on a 12-1 run to take command. Ruiz hit back-to-back 3-pointers and baskets by Richelle Najera and Hansen pushed the lead to 27-19. The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the half at 32-22 after a 3-pointer by Williams and the Golden Eagles took a 34-25 halftime lead after a basket by Alisha Belt.
 
Cal State L.A. quickly extended its lead to 20 points in the first five minutes of the second half. Consecutive baskets by Hansen, Najera and Jazzi Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 53-33 lead.
 
The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the game at 62-37 on a basket by Devin Riezebos with 12:40 to go. The Golden Eagles led by at least 20 points the rest of the way.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
