Golden Eagles Run Past Warriors To Begin CCAA Trip

TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association weekend trip off to a promising start.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 77-64 victory over Cal State Stanislaus Friday in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (8-5, 6-3 CCAA) pulled into a fourth-place tie with Cal State Stanislaus in the CCAA by winning for the fourth time in its last five games.

Lacy Ramon had 18 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. She hit all three of her 3-point tries in the opening half while helping Cal State L.A. build its early advantage. Tessondra Williams had 17 points and Richelle Najera had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Theresa Henderson had 25 points and 13 rebounds for Cal State Stanislaus (4-9, 1-8 CCAA). Jameiz Terrell added 14 points.

Fourteen players saw time on the court for the Golden Eagles, while nine scored. Jazzi Johnson and Lacey Gibbons scored seven points each. Erika Ruiz added six points on a pair of 3-pointers.

Cal State L.A. shot 44.4 percent from the floor (28-of-63) and limited Cal State Stanislaus to just 32.4 percent (24-of-74). The Golden Eagles hit six of their 16 attempts from 3-point range and knocked down 15-of-22 free-throw attempts. Cal State Stanislaus had a 42-35 rebounding edge. Cal State L.A. committed 16 turnovers to 13 for the Warriors.

Ramon scored Cal State L.A.'s first five points of the game on a 3-pointer and basket to stake the Golden Eagles to a quick 5-2 lead. The Golden Eagles took a 17-10 lead after a Gibbons basket, but the Warriors went on a run and took a 22-21 lead after a pair of free throws by Lauren Godde. Ramon, though, hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Johnson hit four free throws to give the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 39-29 late in the half and Cal State L.A. settled for a 46-38 halftime lead.

A 3-pointer by Terrell to open the second half cut the margin to 46-41, but Williams hit two straight baskets to boost the lead back to 50-41. Cal State L.A. was able to maintain leads at least as large as seven points the rest of the way. Two free throws by Williams opened up a 54-43 lead with 16 minutes to play and a 3-pointer by Gibbons made it 68-56 with seven minutes remaining.

A basket by Alisha Belt and a later free throw by Belt gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 75-59.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State.
