Golden Eagles Get Back On Winning Track With CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team picked up a much-needed win Wednesday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, but it certainly wasn't easy.
 
The Golden Eagles were able to fight off a stern challenge from Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 Wednesday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-6, 3-4 CCAA) had to battle at the end to win each of the three sets.
 
Chelsea Hamilton had 13 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, while Marquis Mora had nine kills and two service aces. Reanna Hill had eight kills.
 
Elizabeth Krieger had 10 kills to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-10, 0-7 CCAA). Delea Pursel had eight kills and two service aces.
 
The Golden Eagles had a 50-33 edge in kills and hit at a .298 percentage to .183 for the Toros. Cal State Dominguez Hills had more aces, 5-4, and blocks, 4-3.
 
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 27 set assists and nine digs for Cal State L.A., while Shea Hamilton had 10 set assists and four digs. Alexandra Risko also had nine digs for the Golden Eagles.
 
The Golden Eagles managed to pull away late in all three sets.
 
In the opening frame, the Golden Eagles trailed as late as 16-15 and were tied at 17-17 before a service error and kill by Hamilton gave them the lead for good at 19-17. A kill by Hamilton, an ace by Taeatafa and a block by Mora and Hill put the Golden Eagles ahead, 22-18. The Toros got as close as 24-22 after an ace by Olivia White, but a kill by Mary Laupepa closed out the set.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed in the second set, 11-8 and 13-10 before climbing back into the frame. Consecutive kills by Hill and Natalia Gonzalez broke a 16-16 tie and put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Kills by Gonzalez and Taeatafa opened up a 21-18 edge and Cal State L.A. led by at least two points the rest of the way. A kill by Samantha Potter got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and she also delivered the kill to end the set.
 
Cal State L.A. surged to a 15-9 lead in the third set before Cal State Dominguez Hills rattled off four straight points to make things tight again. An ace by Pursel drew the Toros to within one point, 18-17, but kills by Hamilton and Briana Fields and a block by Taeatafa made it 21-17. Kills by Fields and Hamilton made it 23-18 and an ace by Fields made it match point at 24-18. The Toros saved one match point on a kill by Prusa, but a kill by Jillian Paul ended the match.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona.
