LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team was locked in a defensive struggle with Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday in a game that looked like it would be decided by the first goal.
As it turned out, the Golden Eagles were glad it did because a second-half goal lifted Cal State L.A. to a 1-0 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association action in Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (5-2-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten string to four games with its third straight shutout victory.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-4, 2-4 CCAA), which beat Cal State L.A., 1-0, earlier this season, dropped its fourth straight decision.
Cal State L.A. had an 11-10 advantage in shots and Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Lisa Ohberg, who scored the first goal in Cal State L.A.'s 2-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, notched the only goal of the game on Sunday. It came in the 70
th minute from a terrific shot from outside the box after an unsuccessful clearing attempt by the Toros.
The play was set up by an outstanding rush by
Gabbi Segall, who dribbled into the box and was involved in a collision with a Toro defender and goalkeeper Tiffany Hollis. The ball rolled to Maddi Meaghan, whose header toward the goal was cleared out of play by a defender.
After the Cal State L.A. throw-in, the ball was crossed into the box and the Toros tried to clear it. Instead, the ball went to Ohberg, who drilled in her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Jessie Walworth and Hollis each made five saves. The save of the game for Walworth was a diving stop of a shot by Taylor Canatsey in the 69
th minute.
It was a rough ending for both goalies. Walworth was upended after snaring a free kick near the goal and was down for several minutes before continuing. Hollis was shaken up when Segall, on another impressive run, dribbled into the box and Hollis collided with her while smothering the ball before a shot could be taken.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with the first of six consecutive road games, this one at Cal Poly Pomona.
