Golden Eagles Are Unable To Slow Down Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was unable to slow down Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Wolves' Den.

Cal State L.A. managed to even the match at one set each, but Sonoma State regrouped for a 25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-16 win Saturday night. The Golden Eagles (5-6, 2-4 CCAA) had to settle for a split of their two-match conference road trip.

Natalia Gonzalez had 15 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, while Reanna Hill had 10 kills. Kaylynne Taeatafa had 42 set assists and 14 digs, while April Reyes had 12 digs and Alexandra Risko had 11 digs.

Keala Peterson, Regan Rickert and Allyson Sather had 14 kills each for Sonoma State (10-2, 7-0 CCAA), which remained undefeated in conference play.

Cal State L.A. was simply unable to slow down Sonoma State's offensive attack. The Seawolves hit at a .322 clip throughout the match, while Cal State L.A. hit at a .192 percentage. Sonoma State had a 63-46 advantage in kills.

The Golden Eagles trailed almost immediately in the first set and Sonoma State cruised to a 25-15 win. Cal State L.A., though, rebounded in the second set and evened the match. An ace by Colby Joseph opened up a 17-12 lead and the Golden Eagles were never threatened again. A Mary Laupepa kill made it 22-17, a kill by Hill made it 23-17 and a kill by Gonzalez got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-18. Another kill by Hill ended the set.

The Golden Eagles briefly took a lead in the third set. Back-to-back aces by Marquis Mora gave the Golden Eagles an 8-6 lead and a kill by Gonzalez made it 9-7. Sonoma State, though, scored the next four points and led the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. never led in the final set. The Golden Eagles tied the frame at 11-11 after three straight kills by Gonzalez, but the Seawolves scored two straight points and led the rest of the way. A kill by Kymberly Silveyra kept the margin at 18-15, but Sonoma State outscored the Golden Eagles, 7-1 the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return home and have three matches in the Eagles Nest next week, beginning with a Wednesday match against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
