ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put an end it to its four-match losing streak with an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road win.
The Golden Eagles overcame a stumble in the second set and beat Humboldt State, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 25-17 in a conference contest in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (5-5, 2-3 CCAA) used a balanced attack and played solid defense to record the win.
Natalia Gonzalez led the way with a season-high 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .452.
Marquis Mora added nine kills, while
Mary Laupepa had eight kills.
Alexa Rosendale had 11 kills for Humboldt State (4-6, 1-5 CCAA), while Oceana Matsubu had 10 kills.
Cal State L.A. had a big 55-35 advantage in kills and hit at a .206 clip while limiting Humboldt State to a .093 percentage. The Golden Eagles had a 10-5 edge in service aces, while Humboldt State had a 12-3 advantage in blocks.
Chelsea Hamilton added six kills,
Samantha Potter had five kills and four aces,
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 41 service aces and 16 digs, while
April Reyes had 15 digs.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first three points of the match, but roared back to take a 16-7 lead after a kill by Gonzalez. A kill by Hamilton gave Cal State L.A. a 22-10 lead and the Golden Eagles eventually closed out the set on an ace by Potter.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set and had a 23-19 advantage until Humboldt State scored the next four points. The Golden Eagles had set points at 24-23 and 25-24 (after a kill by Potter), but the Lumberjacks scored the next three points to take the set and even the match.
Cal State L.A., though, was strong in the final two sets. The Golden Eagles held a slim 16-12 lead in the third set before scoring four straight points to break it open. A Humboldt State error started the run, a kill by
Briana Fields made it 17-12, an ace by Fields made it 18-12, a block by Taeatafa and Mora made it 19-12 and a kill by Gonzalez completed the run. Cal State L.A. eventually opened up a 24-15 lead on a kill by Taeatafa and, after Humboldt State scored four straight points, a kill by Laupepa ended the set.
Cal State L.A. led narrowly in the final set, 18-16, but scored the next six points to take control of the set. Gonzalez had four kills during the run, including back-to-back kills that made it 24-16. Humboldt State saved the first match point, but a kill by Mora ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match at Sonoma State.
