Box Score

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team certainly had its moments against California Baptist on Wednesday, but the Golden Eagles were unable to sustain their momentum long enough to post a victory.

Cal State L.A. (4-3) dropped its second straight match, but made things tough on the Lancers (6-3), who are new members of the Pacific West Conference.

Marquis Mora had 13 kills and four aces to lead the Golden Eagles, while Natalia Gonzalez contributed 13 kills. Ingrid Carmona was the big story of the match, pounding down 27 kills and hitting at a .393 clip to lead the Lancers.

After falling behind early and dropping the first set, Cal State L.A. held leads in each of the final three sets. The Golden Eagles, however, were only able to win one of those.

The Golden Eagles rallied impressively from an early deficit in the second set. Trailing 9-7, the Golden Eagles scored the next 14 points to turn things around. After getting a sideout on a kill by Mora to make it 9-8, Joseph led the Golden Eagles on the lengthy run with her serving. Joseph had three service aces during the stretch that included a pair of California Baptist timeouts. Mora had a pair of kills and a block, while Briana Fields also had a pair of kills. The third ace by Joseph gave the Golden Eagles a commanding 21-9 lead. Cal State L.A. closed out the set on a kill by Mary Laupepa.

Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 21-16 lead in the third set and still had a 23-19 advantage after a kill by Mora. California Baptist, though, scored the next three points to get back into the set. Cal State L.A. was unable to convert on four set-point opportunities, the last of which came at 28-27. California Baptist tied it on an attack error and then got back-to-back kills from Carmona to end the set.

Cal State L.A. had a 10-5 lead in the fourth set after an ace by Laupepa and the Golden Eagles were still even at 14-14 after a kill by Gonzalez before California Baptist finally pulled away.
