TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw its hopes of qualifying for the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament take a big hit on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles came up short in both ends of a doubleheader, losing twice to Cal State Stanislaus by scores of 5-4 and 3-0. Cal State L.A. (24-21, 18-17 CCAA) has lost the first three games of the four-game conference series at Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles have slumped to sixth in the conference and have slipped further behind third-place Sonoma State (20-14 in conference) and fourth-place Cal State San Bernardino (19-14 in conference). Cal State Stanislaus (23-17, 15-16 CCAA) has pulled to within one game of the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles battled in the opener, erasing a 4-2 deficit with two runs in the top of the ninth inning, only to fall when the Warriors scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. In the nightcap, Cal State L.A. managed only two hits -- both singles -- and came up empty in all seven innings against Cal State Stanislaus starter Leonard Giammonco.
Cal State L.A. starter
Gabriel Asakura was touched for two runs in the first and one more in the second as Cal State Stanislaus jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Warriors have not trailed in the first three games of the series. Asakura settled down and didn't allow a run the rest of the way, but Cal State L.A.'s offense never got untracked.
Asakura went six innings and gave up six hits and three runs while walking out four and striking out three. He fell to 6-2 on the season and has lost consecutive starts with Cal State L.A. failing to score a run in either game. The Golden Eagles had dropped a 1-0 decision at Chico State in Asakura's last start.
The Warriors also jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener against Cal State L.A. starter
David Arredondo.
Chad Nacapoy hit a pair of solo home runs in the game, including one to lead off the bottom of the ninth.
Cliff Quick, who had four hits in the game, hit a two-out double to keep the Golden Eagles alive and he scored on a double by
Brian Compton.
The Warriors, though, got a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the inning from Zach Cadet to win the game.
Quick was 4-for-5, while Nacapoy and
Manny Acosta also had three hits each for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. stranded 10 runners on base.
Arredondo went eight innings and allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. He walked one and struck out five.
Jacob Valenzuela took the loss in the ninth. Vinny Pacchetti went 8 2/3 innings for the Warriors, while Phil Quade, after surrending the game-tying double to Compton, picked up the win. The first five batters in the Cal State Stanislaus lineup had two hits each.
