SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team has kept its season alive thanks to a history-making win Tuesday night in Cousoullis Arena.
The Golden Eagles overcame foul trouble and a talented Cal State San Bernardino team in a 66-60 win Tuesday night in an opening-round California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament game. The victory was the first for Cal State L.A. in a CCAA Tournament game and was the first for the Golden Eagles in Cousoullis Arena since 1998.
Chris Robinson led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points, while
David Norris had 13 points -- all in the second half -- and
Franklin Session had 13 points despite battling foul trouble and fouling out after playing just 28 minutes.
Leland Jones had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Theron Laudermill had a team-high 10 points for the Coyotes, while Nate Roth had nine points and David Jefferson and Corey Gaston had eight points each.
Cal State L.A., the No. 6 seed, will advance to the CCAA semi-finals at Cal State East Bay. The Golden Eagles will face top-seed Humboldt State at 3 p.m. on Friday. The tournament winner will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Golden Eagles (15-12) beat the No. 3 seed Coyotes (17-10) for the second time this season after snapping a 24-game losing streak to Cal State San Bernardino at the Eagles Nest in December. The Coyotes were the two-time defending tournament champions.
The Golden Eagles shot just 37 percent, but held the Coyotes to just 32.3 percent shooting. Cal State L.A. held a 43-40 rebounding edge and knocked down 24-of-32 free-throw attempts, many of them down the stretch as the Golden Eagles were trying to preserve their lead.
Cal State L.A., which trailed at halftime by 10 points in both of the regular-season games, never let the Coyotes hold more than a two-point lead on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles, in fact, led for most of the game. Cal State L.A. scored the last five points of the half on a basket by Hoffman and a 3-pointer by Session to take a 30-25 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles never trailed in the second half, although a 3-pointer by Cal State San Bernardino's Grants Huff tied the game at 47-47 with 9:56 to play.
Cal State L.A., though, scored the next seven points on two free throws from Norris, a layup by Jones, a layup from Norris and a free throw by Robinson to take a 54-47 lead. The Coyotes cut the lead to 54-52 with 4:27 to go, but a Norris jumper boosted the lead back to 56-52 with 2:29 to go.
Two free throws by Norris made it 58-53 with 1:33 to go, but the Coyotes kept coming back, cutting the lead down to two points twice in the final 30 seconds. Norris hit two free throws to push the lead back to 62-58 with 24 seconds to go and two free throws by
Bussey Ellis essentially iced the game, making it 64-60 with 11 seconds left.
After Jones grabbed the rebound of a missed 3-pointer, Ellis hit two more free throws to account for the final margin.
The Golden Eagles accomplished the win despite losing Session for most of the second half with foul trouble. He played only nine minutes in the second half and finally fouled out on an offensive foul with 3:42 to go.
Hoffman and Jones also played for long stretches of the second half with foul trouble. Hoffman finally fouled out with two minutes left and Jones was able to complete the game with four fouls. The Golden Eagles got significant contributions from
Trevor Hopkins, who played 16 solid minutes.
