POMONA -- Cal State L.A..'s women's basketball team endured another rough first half and sustained its seventh straight loss Friday in Pomona.
The Golden Eagles managed only six first-half baskets and never could recover in a 71-47 California Collegiate Athletic Association defeat to Cal Poly Pomona in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (6-13, 3-12 CCAA) scored 34 of its 47 points in the second half.
Cal State L.A. trailed, 38-13, at halftime. The Golden Eagles competed better in the second half and, after falling behind by as many as 34 points, were able to slice the deficit to 16 points before Cal Poly Pomona (16-2, 13-1 CCAA) pulled away again.
Lacy Ramon was the only Golden Eagle player to reach double figures with 13 points.
Karmen Gunn had eight points and seven rebounds, while
Erika Ruiz had seven points.
Reyana Colson led Cal Poly Pomona with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while J.J. Judge finished with 14 points for the Broncos.
Cal State L.A., after shooting just 18.2 percent in the first half (6-of-33), improved in the second half by hitting 42.3 percent (11-of-26). Even so, the Golden Eagles finished the game shooting at a 28.8 percent clip (17-of-59).
Cal State L.A. was out-rebounded, 48-36, and had 21 turnovers to 19 for the Broncos. The Golden Eagles did have 14 steals, including four from Ruiz and three each from
Gretchen Tiernan and Gunn.
The Golden Eagles dug themselves a huge hole in the first half. After allowing the first five points of the game, Cal State L.A. made it 5-2 after a basket by Ramon. Another basket by Ramon kept the Golden Eagles within five points at 9-4, but Cal Poly Pomona scored the next 10 points as part of a 19-1 run that put the Broncos ahead, 28-5 edge.
Cal Poly Pomona led by as many as 26 points before settling for a 38-13 halftime lead.
The Broncos went ahead by as many as 34 points in the second half, 51-17, with 15 minutes left in the game. Cal State L.A. finally got untracked and scored the next 13 points on a free throw by Gunn, a free throw by Ramon, a 3-pointer by
Sonia Miller, a layup by Ramon and 3-pointers by
Lorin Hammer and Ruiz that made it 51-30.
The Golden Eagles eventually got to within 16 points at 59-43 after a pair of free throws by Gunn with 5:45 remaining, but Cal Poly Pomona outscored the Golden Eagles, 12-4, the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
